Axle leak after multiple repairs. Need help.

I know this is an old thread, but I've recently encountered a similar issue with leaking axle seals, and I figured I'd post my solution.
I installed an arbor shim (McMaster-Carr # 3088A478) in front of the seal (between seal and differential) so that the lip of the seal would ride on the correct part of the retainer. This method does not require removal and reinstallation of the retainer. I have had no leaks since.
The shims I used are 0.062" (1.57mm) thick, 2.75" OD, and 2.00" ID. Other thicknesses are available.

I had everything apart last year (and 30,000 miles ago) to replace front wheel bearings, rear wheel bearings, and associated knick knacks. I spent a great deal of time measuring and ensuring that I pressed everything correctly.
Amazing that this is such a piss-poor design on an otherwise superb truck. I wonder if custom spacer rings, twice as wide, would solve the issue. In other words, the inner lip of the seal would have no excuse to leak...

I should have posted my solution and perhaps start a new thread on the topic. The issue seems to be that repair shops do not follow proper procedure and press the retainer and the abs ring down too far, which is how other vehicles work. However, if the repair manual is referenced, the abs ring and lipseal/retaining ring is actually "floating" and requires proper measurement from the rest of the assembly, meaning there should be a gap between the bearing retainer and the abs ring. This is why some are having luck turning the retainer around. This issue needs to be made more accessible to people and would warrant a new thread I believe. I'll make one soon describing it in more detail.

Also, what helps ensuring you have proper seal is to coat the retaining ring with some grease, pushing in the axle then pull in back out to see if the seal is making good contact. If not the abs ring and retainer need to be "scooted up".

I look forward to your writeup regarding the use of arbor shims.
