I took my spindle down to the toyota dealer yesterday to get the wheel bearing pressed out. The tech said that the axle hub was stuck in there and he couldnt get it out. He said that he put 5k lbs. on it and tried heating it and no luck. My question is this a common occurrence, can you use more pressure without damaging the spindle? I am doing the manual hub conversion and would really like to try to save my ABS if possible. I wouldnt mind getting another ABS spindle from the junkyard but if stuck hubs are a common thing, i may have to consider loosing the ABS

 

I'm having the same problem. I'm not sure if they're talking about the Taco spindles or the 4runner ones but he said he put 20k of pressure on them and it didn't budge. I may have to take it to Toyota and see if they'll do it. Not sure if they'll do something custom like that or not.

 

Yes, its pretty common. Tacomas and 4runners use the same spindle.

Out of the 2 dealerships in this area, only one has custom made a jig to press out tacoma/4runner hubs. They need to think outside the box and fabricate something to aid the press, or you need to take it to a dealer that already has figured it out

 

5k isn't going to do it......more like 20k lb of force to get them out.

I had my buddy fab this up, used it today to start tearing down my spare spindles for manual hub conversions.

All you need is something to support the spindle in the press. This isn't very intricate or anything, but it's burly and does the job. Flanges together to allow the spindle body to be supported evenly.

Usually you just use blocks and can support the spindle in only two places, but for some reason most Tacoma/4Runner bearings don't want to come out and do so violently, so a jig like this is necessary.
