Don't be so sure about that. My parents have a 2000 Ford Explorer XLT V8 with AWD (or FullTime 4x4) and an auto trans. Around town, it gets about 14mpg, but on the highway, it gets over 23mpg! As a contrast, my 97 4Runner with the 3.4L V6, part-time 4x4, and manual transmission gets 17mpg around town and about 21mpg on the highway in 2WD. I'd say they're about even overall.
