Automatic into a 5spd

I have a 98 4runner 4 cyl 2.7L automatic. Im wanting to drop a 5 spd in it and get 4.88 or 5.29 gears too. Which would be best for the 5 spd and how much do u think it would cost to do that. Wanting to drive hwy @ 75 and be able to hit the trail at a moments notice too... im leanin toward the 4.88 gears and maybe a locker but not sure yet.. help me figure this out!!

just do the locker first, and then see. it makes a hell of a difference.

i think with 4:88's you kinda get the best of both worlds

You wanting to keep the 31" tires, and go with the 5speed? I would say 4.56 is going to be good with 31-33" tires, or 4.88 if you are definetly going to be running at least 33"s

I have a 5speed 2.7 with 4.56 and 32"s and its nice. I am also getting a locker, actually putting it in tomorrow.

Here is a picture of cruising along at 70.

I see you like the vols, I am a jr at Tennessee

4.88's and 5.29's are some gears you'll want for way larger tires...IMO. But, its hard to say.

I run 35's on 4.30's (I've got a V6) and its pretty darn nice.

And again... Stop calling it Cali...!!! For the LOVE of GOD!!! haha. No seriously.

yeah, i'd say go with something like the 4.56s with the 5-speed if your actually gonna do the swap, as anything lower than that will make your rpms go up even higher...

yeah, those 33s might will give ya some better cruising speeds. one question though: i'm pretty sure i have 4.10s in my 4runner, as i turn exactly 3000 rpms when at 80 mph. can you read the VIN to determine the gears?

you can read the vin and tell what gears you got. also you can call the dealer and they should be able to tell you.

With the v6 5speed and no elocker, you most likely have 4.10's

Well it will probably be cheaper to sell your 4runner, and find a 5speed. Gotta get the tranny, transfer case, all the clutch stuff, ecu for a manual, and wire it all up.

Not sure exactly what all goes into the swap, and costs.

I'm assuming a 5 speed could be taken from a 96-2003 Tacoma and 4runner?

You'll most likely have to get it from the junk yard.

how badly will performance be affected if you keep the auto and put 33s? how much would you have to regear ?
how adversely would highway performance be affected?
most importantly to me, how much more gas would be wasted?
sorry if i jack your thread, i was about to ask a simliar question, and didnt want to be repetitive...
thanks in advance,

-Kino
