Is anyone not having motor probels with the 3.0?

My only issues were due to the failure of the ignition coil and module, after 193,000 miles. Not bad if you ask me.

Knock on wood.....

But no problems here yet. I've got almost 110,000 on the odometer now. Just been changing the oil every 3,000 miles. Had a slightly leaky valve cover on the driver's side, and was losing about 1/4 quart every 2,000 miles or so, but I tightened that up back in December, and for the most part, I think I got that all taken care of.

I will probably be doing a new timing belt in 10-15K miles, and at that time, I'll put a new water pump on as well. The only thing I've really had to fix was a leaky radiator, but replacement was an easy job. So far, can't complain about my 3.slow at all!

Hate to hear that you are still having issues Lee. It seems like only yesterday on 4wire that you were rebuilding yours and I was getting info about having mine done.

My 3.0 was trouble free untill about 130k miles. Then a valve went bad. This resulted in a situation that lasted too long and was too much $$$$$$$. Anyway, due to other issues like the head shop did not understand what shims to use, and the other shop putting the HG on backwards, a 1 month repair took 5 months, then 3 months to find out about the backwards HG then another 2 months to get that fixed up. The shop was honest and ate the cost of the backwards HG, but the time frame was just so long. It was basicaly a full year of this one issue.

Then the next year (this past October) the fan bearing asy. decided to dry up and lock. This was while we were comming back from a vacation 2 hours from home. That was at about 145k or so.

Then there has been the intermittent non start issue for the past year and a half. I do think however this has been fixed. There was a wire bundle next to the dist. that I believe was the issue or possibly the starter contacts, or maybe the cold start injector. Anyway, after working with that, and replacing the contacts in the starter and replacing the CSI, it has started everytime for the past 6 months.

So in recap, 155000 miles now. Problems I have had are bad valve, locked up fan bearing, CSI, starter, and power steering pump leak. All these items have been fixed and Im going to keep it now. Ive put more money in it than I should have starting with a new paint job, but it still does what I need.

I think the 3.0 is just one of those engines that there are great ones and there are bad ones. I have a friend that has a truck with the 3.0 and he has over 200k trouble free miles. its just that way I guess.

Lee, could there be some oil passage issue thats not letting the top end get all the oil it needs?

Wifes 90 has given 160,000 trouble free miles. We did replace the timing belt at 150k, didn't break just preventive.

You mean a

POWERJOKE?

lol

I wouldn't doubt it at all if the 3.0 was in a manual taco. Now give the powerjoke a six gun tuner and say bye bye cuz you'll be eating smog left from the powerjoke as it passes you like you are standing still...

My 3vze is running flawlessly even with 15* BTDC timing ( ) at 276000 miles.

I just SOOOO wish I had NEVER gotten this POS 2.25" exhuast. That was the WORST investment I ever made with this truck, I lost at LEAST 10hp and about 8mpg. Top end speed is back down to 90mph - maybe the ECT mod will change this, if not the exhaust is coming off.

What exhaust do you have on there?

'95 4x4 pickup with 3VZ-E / 5 speed (4.56 gears)

Got it with 68K miles ... now at 125K
Head gasket is NOT covered under Toyota HG replacement campaign
Mileage ... city 16-18 ... highway 18-19 mpg

Performance mods that worked
2.5 inch exhaust (low end improved)
performance muffler (high end improved little)
K&N FIPK (.5 mpg increase in fuel in over all performance)

Performance mods that didn't work
Tornado Air System (50 bucks down the drain)

Engine troubles;

At 120K miles valve cover, cam and main aft / forward seals leaked,
timing belt needed to be changed plus pulley.
ASE Certified mechanic performed tuneup plus fixed leaks.
COST = 3,000

Things I like about the engine:
bottom end is solid
casting has no preceivable flaws
casting has more nickel than US blocks -- longer lasting
siamesed cylinders
simple single OHC design

Things I don't like about the engine:
valve chatter
heads aren't recessed to allow copper head gasket around cylinders
Oil filter location
Head bolts ... crap crap crap
timing belt + pulley change 60k miles
Can't turbo it without lots of $$$$
Can't supercharge it without lots of $$$$

Summary; A good general engine with few serious flaws (head gasket + valves).

Hind sight; Would had perferred the 22RE and supercharged it.

206 almost 207,000 miles and running good. Prev. owner took good care I was told and did the HGR @ 145K. I got the rig @ 174K & it ran so so. Water pump died @ 192K & 197K. The 2nd time the WP died it took out the Tbelt, tensioners, & an idler pulley. Cost me $996. Since then ive kept it tuned & lubed every 2.5K with Supreme fuel & it runs good. I am assuming a fuel issue could be occuring though. I used to be able to tap the key & it would start. Seems like its harder to start these days. Maybe because I put Mid G in last fill up though. Hard to say. Ben
