My '85 toyota 22r is acting up again (actually the weber part of it is) and I am a bit concerned that this motor is hiding some nastyness.
However, I've got my first love of a motor siting in a busted up '80 bronco in my front yard. Its a 302 but it was totally rebuilt and tricked out less than 10,000 miles ago.
Depending on the difficulty involved I would like to swap the SB into the yota. I wouldn't be the one to do it, I'd help my mechanic buddy who is freakishly good and cheap, do the tough stuff. I guess what I'm asking you guys is I don't think this sounds that hard but in my reading everyone says its just a total bitch. I aslo haven't seen a write up for a carbed V8 swap.

So I've seen most the links although at this moment I haven't been able to search pirate at all and I only found a few threads here and most of those dealt with issues of computer and wire harness stuff which I don't really need to worry about.

Any help/suggestions would be appreciated

 

A few years ago, I had a 1991 Ford Ranger with a 4.0 V6 that was acting up too, so I decided to put a carbed 302 V8 in. There are some conversion kits available for that so I ordered the kit (radiator, trans adaptor, motor mounts, headers, etc.). Not sure if kits exist for Yotas or not, but I'm sure the engine compartments of the Ranger and 4Runner are pretty close to the same size.

It was a total pain the the butt. The engine fit pretty well, although it was a tight fit, but the accessories (A/C comp, power steering pump, etc.) all had to be modified. Not to mention the plumbing and wiring issues. That's one conversion I wouldn't do again!

 

You have all those issues with any swap, no matter what it is, so going into an engine swap a person needs to know that's what it entails. It is not a bolt-together-by-numbers deal, it is a custom job mechanically, and for most people the wiring is a total mystery. Putting in a carbed engine eliminates a bunch of the details that haunt most people. There are no "kits" although most any parts needed for most any logical swap are available.

That said - lots and lots of Fords have been put into Yotas and it is about as easy a swap as any. Look to compaines like Advance Adapters, Novak, LCE, and especially Downey and NWOR (ugh) for adapters and bits and pieces.
