Alternator Insta-Death? '82 4x4

Hey Y'all!

So...I'm driving down the road the other day and my 3 month old (rebuilt) alternator stops charging (dash lights come on, and voltage gauge drops to 11.5-12V). When my last alternator went out, it happened intermittently, if I just kept driving it eventually would kick back on....but this time it was just kablam - no more juice.

Checked the connections, and everything seems tight.
Battery is new.
Fuses (interior-drivers side) are all ok.

my thoughts are:

1 - rebuilt alternator took a cr@p. (is it odd for an alternator to just catastrophically fail w/o going wonky for a while first?)(oh, and the alternator I took in for rebuilding 3 months ago was "fried" and "un-rebuildable")

2 - external charge controller crapped out? I'd like to test it, but the Haines manual is incredibily unclear on this point as there seems to be 2 different types of alternators, and 3 types of external charge controllers that could possibly be found in my truck -> the connection to the charge controller is green and oval shaped

3 - is there a fusible link in there somewhere that I could check??

4 - any other fuses hidden anywhere that I could check??

5 - anything else I'm missing????
