I am currently in the market for a truck. In those years mentioned i wanted to pick up a 96 to 01 ish .
Am i glad that i have read this thread before i started shopping.

I have a couple of questions though. Does this recall extend to Canada? i read a post from Vancouver so i am assuming yes.
Do they manufacture the Canadian and US trucks at the same place? With the same shotty frames?

I am just wondering if this is something i need to worry about.

For all of you guys who have been offered the buyback, how long did you own the vehicle before that happened?

I bought an '00 extended cab 3 months ago and for some reason am just now finding out about this. Since I am a newer owner, does anyone know how this might be handled? The truck has been in VA and PA most of its life, so it is likely to have some rust.

Thanks!

Glad I registered here and checked this thread. Have a 97 Tacoma, 245K miles, but in awesome shape, tight as a pin. Doing some brake work later today, pads front and adjust rears, will have it on stands, so will for sure be looking at the frame. Been a Colorado truck all it's life, could be interesting. Looking through the posts, I just bought this a couple years ago, would it be purchase price, or the 1.5 X KBB?

'99 Tacoma

'99 Tacoma... this has to be a winner:

Dealer has the truck - I'm still waiting on decision of frame replacement or 1.5 KBB buyback. Can't believe I was driving this thing the last 13 years and didn't get killed.

Well, I won't be in the payoff, frame is in AWESOME shape, factory black paint still in great condition on most of it. Just as well, it is a great truck, I'd just ennd up buying another used one, and not know what I am getting into.

I just received a letter from Toyota to have my 1998 truck inspected again and coated if it passes. The dealer said that this is the first time that they had a Tacoma between the years 96 to 2000 that would be receiving the undercoating treatment. Has anyone else with a Tacoma between 96 and 2000 received a similar letter?

Just had mine coated, only they don't tell you that this coating NEVER DRIES!!! it remains sticky and tacky forever. I had it done just before installing a lift and bumper and after those jobs my tools and I were covered in this black sticky crappy stuff. The only thing that gets it off is WD40. My frame was ok so I wish I knew it would be like this as I would have skipped the spray. I called Toyota and they said they have been receiving other complaints too but they are doing nothing about it and if you don't have it sprayed the will not honor the warranty. The guy from Toyota was also very rude and kept interrupting me, I was very unimpressed...

Anyone know what they're doing with 01-04's?

IE if the frame is okay, how long are they warrantying them? 15 years from purchase?

I have heard if the spray (gooo) was not applied by Oct 10' then the warranty is void.

Reason I'm asking is I'm in the market (already lost one yota to this issue pre-buy-back) and want to make sure that I dont get left out in the cold again.....Really would like to get one with a new frame and a bunch of new front end parts !!!!

I just bought my 03 a few months ago and got it sprayed, there was something about a deadline, I think it might be oct '11. But as I've said if the frame looks good I wish I had not had it sprayed. I was just at the outer banks driving on the beach and now I have sand stuck all over my frame... With any luck maybe it'll be less sticky now...

I'll second him, don't spray your truck. Seeing that junk in person, you might as well just use roofing tar, because that is pretty much what was put on his.

Just noticed this thread... I recently bought a '99 and didnt even check to see if the frame was rusted. I like the truck but if I can make a little extra cash off of it I will def. be buying a new one. When I get home I am gonna check it out. Did they send out a recall notice on this? And if so is there anyway to check and see if my truck has already been inspected? Thanks.

They probably sent a notice to whom ever owned the truck when the recall came out. Just take the truck to a Toyota dealer and they will tell you if it's been done and they can check it if it has not been checked in the last 6 months.

Toyota Canada buy back

I recently found my frame was rusting through on my '99 Tacoma ext.cab 4x4 V6.
I took it in to Toyota and they ended up buying it back off me for $16,500( I had paid $10,000 2 years earlier)
They told me they pay 1.5 times the blue book value and they go by excellent condition no matter what shape it's in, as long as it runs and drives and is less than 15 years old.
They also told me I can keep my custom bumpers, winch, shocks, stereo, etc. as long as I return it with all the factory parts.
Great deal since I had recently crunched both front fenders when lower balljoints broke, not to mention all the scratches and dents from 4x4'in.
I went out and found a '00 Tacoma ext.cab 4x4 V6 for $9000 and I'm hoping it'll rust through by 2015, if not I'm gonna box in the c-channel frame and undercoat it.
