If you don't have a rear locker on your 99 you would be good to go if you added an ARB or swap in a factory locker. The e-locker rear ends are very hard to find here in SD though.
Yeah it would be tough, as I remmeber(not 100%) the resevoir is a lot bigger, and there are going to be quite a few extra relays and such, it would be much cheaper to add a front and rear locker, and you would definately have a much better setup. Last time I checked 2 ARBs and a compressor were around 1100, and I am sure the parts from Toyota alone would run that much, and youwould spend months trying to figure out the wiring. You probably could, but you would get way more bang for the buck out of 2 lockers, you could even save like 400 or so, and just do a rear locker, and still be just as good if not better.

The rear locker was available on the 3rd gen 4Runner up to and including the 2000 model. Just an FYI. 2001, it was no longer offered as an option and instead they have the selected AWD/TC features.

The atrac is always ov, so the brakes will always grab hwen a will starts to slip, which transfers power to the wheel not getting power. But when you lock the center diff your VSC goes off(you can kick the ass end around, and slide the truck). Hope this helps, there is a ton of info on here about it, it just may be a little tough to sift through.

But yeah, if you have the money, an '02 and an aftermarket selectable is probably THE best way to go. The Rear diff lock is a nice option, but it is too bad they didnt have the option of a center diff lock also. The new Jeep Commander's and older Benz G Classes had seperate Center/Rear/Front Diff lock switches.

It is much easier to add a rear diff or front diff locker, then a center(because you don;t have a cneter differential on the older trucks). SO, for the extra $600-$700 for a rear locker, I'd go that route, if you even wind up needing it. I havent gotten that good yet. I'd go 99 or newer, and add a locker if you think you need one later.

:pat: It does have a lever! you can use it to go to 4wd low or 4Neutral(you just ahve to push the button to go 4wd first). I've had many a trucks with a "true" TCase,(all Fords), and I havent broke the lever or the button so I really have no gripe with either. My new 250 just has some dial thing, which pulls of fairly easily, I'm still waiting for someone to steal it.

I aways did enjoy the satisfaction of a good old fashioned T-Case handle you have to jerk around... the push-button electronics just don't seem as fun

Not so! The '98s and earlier model years had NO center differential and were all part-time 4WD. Lockers were optional on the '97, '98 and '99 models, AFAIK.

Couple things, the 01 and 02 and earlier w/ the multi mode system were not AWD, they were full time 4WD, it's not the same as AWD, point out the transfer case on an AWD Subaru. I owned a 2000 and now an 02 Sport, both were great trucks. As far as refinement my 2000 and 02 were equal, same interior and exterior look, 98 and older had the different front end and interior. The 02 has a few things the 00 didn't, such as all rotary dial for temp control and turn signals that are quiet, my 2000 had the loud clicking signals. The rear locker is better for off road but the center lock, which allows for full time 4WD is better for 90% of the people out there. Also the newer models have the TRAC system and VSC, VSC is off when the center diff is locked, these systems, mostly TRAC, work to mimic a limited slip, they will apply braking to a slipping tire and force the power to the other side, theoretically this will work front and back so it could be better than the locker in some cases, if it works properly. If you want a locker or a 5 speed or a 4 cylinder your choice is simple, 2000 was the last year for all those options, if those aren't important find one you like and buy it.

Remember in the pre '01s the AWD option isn't available on anything but the Limiteds. The SR5s and lesser had teh standard automatic or the 5 speed.

Hmmm,my mom's has the 4 wheel symbol in the center of the guages with the center part showing what is the diff and it locks and operates just like AWD from what I could tell driving it. Only Limiteds had this tho'.

The lockers could be had in 2000 as well as the '96s too.
