so the swap is done. the light sockets pop into the housing with no prob. i (owning the 99) had to remove the bumper support for the 96-98 bumper to bolt on, but it was direct bolt on. as for the 96-98 taking my 99 bumper you have to modify it a bit, but ill let "thehoerunner" describe what mods he had to do to my 99 bumper to makre it fit his car. thanks again guys..!

Can you post some pics? I was thinking of going to the more flat bumper as well.

swap done. i had to modify the 99 brackets to fit my 96, but it was pretty easy. the lightsockets do not fit in the turn signal housing (well i might have to buy a smaller bulb, then it will, if not, nothing a trip to the junk and a few bucks cant fix for the pigtails). also the bolt on each corner of the bumper doesnt match up, but the 4 bolts that hold the center in hold the bumper pretty tight, u can just zip tie those corners, although i pushed it back and forth and it didnt move around.

first i had to grind down the two screws that molded into the brackets, sorry i didnt take a before picture but here they are grinded down. the red is where the new 1/2 hole should be drilled.

1/2 hole drilled into the 99 bracket

4" gap between holes. to match the female screws on the frame.

all bolted in

before

after

thanks to sktdvs for an awesome trade and to everyone for the help. any questions, ask and i dont mind helping. all i need now is some clear corners, 2001 headlights to finish off the front end...although i just got an idea to trade front ends with a 2002 tacoma..hmmmmm

Get the clear corners and clear turns from Ebay. They're cheap and have held up fine for me for almost a year. '99 is the first year that they started doing the newer headlights and 2001 is the first year they did the bling rear tails. Once you do these, you'll have a newer 3rd gen...

Heres the pics i took today. I didn't do the swap myself but it looked fairly simple. I can't tell if any mods were even made.
'99+ bumper mounted on a '96...

passenger side..

drivers side..

on each side, right above the bumper theres these "brackets" that are bent up and out of the way. I assume they were used for the original bumper?
You can see one here..

thats one hell of a deal... I think the newer bumper with the added lip gives it a more appealing look...

Either way, glad you two guys got what you wanted.

A little off topic here, but did anyone else notice the center caps on this 4Runner?!?

Instead of the "T" logo, they say "TOYOTA"! Where can I get a set of these? These would be perfect to get with the Satoshi mod.

Not really. So far I've only seen them on 2 4Runners (the 'Runner in this thread being the second), and there are a lot of Tacomas/4Runners around here. I've been looking but haven't really found where they came from.

PS: And my friend (owner of the 4Runner I saw them on first) won't trade/sell them to me :'-(

actually, those wheels were purchased off of ebay about 2, maybe 3 years ago. the seller is out of business (on ebay anyhow),and that is where those came from. i noticed those a few months back when he was parked outside at my mom's while we were putting my lift in. funny how i saw his truck all the time and never noticed them.

i'd say hit up all the stores on ebay that are selling toyota wheels. one of them has to have them.

From what I understand, those caps are the knock off caps that people make and sell on ebay. Beings that the logo is a trademark, but the word toyota is ok to use when knocking things off I guess. I see those caps for sale on ebay alot. Especially when I had my limiteds, and lost one of the caps.

cool info. Thanks for posting. I guess I'm not the only one who stays up late wondering what he could do to make his bumper look just a touch sweeter.

I have put 99+ bumpers on 96-98 4runners twice. We fabed brackets to weld on the front of the frame to mount the bumper support but I see you didn't mount it. We never thought about that. We had to cut and splice the wiring for the bumper lights and fog lights but they work great. My dad is still driving the 98 limited we did. I will post pics of his later and try to get a picture of the bracket.

Cool that this is such and easy mod. I love my 96-98 bumper, and the addon spoiler really adds alot.

Bump for a good thread with good info.

I'm sure he's gone, but maybe someone else knows. So the 99 bumper will bolt right up? Thank you.
