99 4runner rear window and power locks issue
Hi there,
I have a 99 4runner with two issues that happened about the same time, but are possibly unrelated.
The power locks won't work from the remote, however they work when using the panel on the driver's side door or using they key from the outside.
Also, the rear window came down (supposedly by itself), and won't go back up. I tested for voltage at the motor for the rear window, and had no power. No fuses are out.
I also had an issue earlier where smoke was coming out from under the glovebox, it smelled electrical, and the passenger front window seemed to stop working intermittently, so I've avoiding using that window ever since.
Any tips on how to diagnose the power locks and rear window issue? seems strange that they both happened at the same time..... thanks

First, I'd check the wires running through the harness between the liftgate and the body for broken wires or bad insulation. The antenna and receiver for the wireless door locks is located in the liftgate so those wires are needed. This is the source of most rear end electrical weirdness.

My rear window would also roll down on its own with nobody around on damp days :i , after replacing the rear hatch "ECU" didn't work, I found that the key switch had corroded which has power all the time and rolls the window down and up was shorting out. Does your rear hatch key work to roll the window down and up, also is the the lock mechanism for the rear hatch locking, if not your door won't lock with the key Fob, they will quickly unlock everything. I take all the covers off my rear hatch annually now and oil the hell out of it, and all the window supports. I've heard the wires in the boot can break also but never had a problem there..
