99 4Runner 4cyl ok for off roading?

Im thinking about buying a 4runner to do some off roading. Probably wouldn't want to do any deep water or rock crawling, just some trail blazing (or what ever its called)

What should i be looking for?
Is a v6 a must?
Does Automatic or Manual matter?

Any information would be great.
Thanks,
-Joe

Nothing wrong with a 4cyl. If it's 4wd you'll have 4lo for the rough stuff. I wouldn't hesitate to pick it up.

You will be fine with a 4 cyl and as for auto or 5 speed. Thats your personnal preference. If you can find one with the diff lock you will be that much farther ahead.
