Im changing out a broken clutch on my 98 4wd Tacoma and there is a lot of oil on the outside of the transmission and on the inner walls around the clutch assembly. Do I have a leak or is that normal?
P.S. the clutch assembly itself was clean, I installed a cheap clutch disk about 8 months ago and it just broke on me.
Outside of the transmission could be from the shifter. Both the transmission and transfer case shifter plates were leaking on my truck. Can you tell what kind of oil? Gear oil or engine oil? Should be pretty easy to tell the difference.
There shouldn't really be oil inside the bell housing...but if it's pretty clear that it's not your rear main leaking, which would probably get all over the clutch, then it's probably coming from the same place the oil on the outside is coming from.
If its leaking and your finding oil on the inside of the clutch it would be from the input shaft on the tranny(requires complete tear down to get to seal), but since your in there it is also advised to do the rear main seal as well since it is easy to access.
