98 taco speed governor
hey guys I got a 98 taco with the 22re m5 trans., look in the sig for mods, I do a Lil bit of interstate travel so i need to do aleast 85ish at some times. so here’s what my prob is, my speedo is like 30 off ex. 90 on the speedo is 70mph. and my truck cuts off when the speedo hits 105 so im only goin like 80 when it cuts off. is there something i can do to not make the governor "not work" and i know i can calibrate my trans but that takes $, and im a broke a$$ collage student so yea.

get a new tcase speedo gear, should be cheap fix.
what gear ratio did you originally come with. Are you sure its off that much? mine is only off 2mph with 4.88's.

The only way your speedometer would be indicating 90 when you're only doing 70 is if you were running 23" tall tires (assuming your speedo was correct with 30" tall tires).
You see, your speedo would read faster if you were running smaller tires or much lower gears with stock tires. So, which is it? Did you fail to mention you regeared to 5.29's while still running your stock 30" tires? If you are running 33" tires and stock gears, your speedo will be reading 10% SLOWER than actual, which means 105 indicated is actually 115mph, unless there's something wrong with your speedo.

Sounds like a pretty terrible idea, especially since 33x12.50r15 Summit Mud Dawgs are only "R" speed rated, which is 106 mph.
.. plus you know, it's a 4wd (I assume) Tacoma, not a performance coupe

Why should that stop him? I've seen a lifted F-250 with 40's and a trailer smoker and he was going 105 at least.

Well you have your answer- there is no cheap solution. The best option is to recalibrate your speedo with a new gearset. URD used to sell a speed limiter defeater box, but they have since stopped (possibly due to legal issues). It wouldn't have been cheaper than a speedo gearset anyway.
I'm curious why your speedometer is reading so fast though What was the stock gear ratio in your truck, 4.10's?
