Unhappy 98 Clutch problem

Hi Everyone, I am new here and the wealth of knowledge is just great.

My situation is the never ending clutch problem I am having. 1998 5SP SR5 4WD with 80k miles on it.

The issues is the major chatter in take off I get on first gear. Coming from the tranny/clutch.

I have had the dealer replace the clutch kit three times and the probem comes back after about 7k miles.
They all use refurb parts and do shave a little off the fly wheel.

I am and getting tired of this...Most of the driving I do is freeway in socal heat and stop and go traffic.

I am looking on upgrading the clutch to an after market: Replacing the Fly wheel, bearing, clutch plate, pressure plate..the works..

I have been reading alot here but confused as I am since I get mixed reviews on the products.

What are your thoughts on:
TRD
Centerforce
OEM

ETC....

Thanks for your answers and advice in advance.

Did the dealer ever replace the flywheel during those 3 times?

clutch chatter

Hi all, I am revisiting this thread again since the problem still persists.

The dealer has not replaced the flywheel, only "reshaped it"? Not sure how to proceed. I really do not want to spend hundreds on a brand new clutch. But this is driving me a little insane.

Had cars with clutches for many years, and this is the only one giving me trouble.

I am asking for help from anyone here who can guide me towards a good direction of what I need to replace so that this problem can go away.

From what I gathered while reading threads here:

Replace the following:
clutch
throw out bearing (spelling)?
Flywheel?
Some spring somewhere under the hood? Even thought he dealer said there is no such thing.

I am beginning to get sick and tired of these dealers honestly.

I now have 35k on this brand new clutch system.

Well a Chatter like that -- Im assuming since no bolts have shot threw, nothing has fallen apart and that its the same problem as when it was first installed -- is almsot guaranteed a flywheel issue and NOT a clutch problem.

Milage isn't a huge issue, if for some reason the flywheel gets some nice hotspots in it from someone being a little heavy on the clutch/burning it up then that can often mean its time to replace it. If the spots are deep then resurfacing will not do anything accept make it look good on the surface. I don't know what kind if shape the clutch is in, but if it were me and I replaced the setup 3 times I would have concluded the flywheels needs replacing.

You can keep the current clutch if its not all blotchy. I would do it yoruself to save money and make sure its done right. CLutches are not hard at all, just time consuming. I would check your pressure plate once you have the kit out and make sure there are no hotspots in that either. If all looks ok, I would REPlACE (not resurface) the flywheel, possibly resurface the PP depening on how it looks and keep the disc if it looks like it has even wear patterning on it.

PS- make sure the pilot and release bearings are good cause if you don't replace them and put everything back to gether ot find out one i sbad you will be pissed

Good luck!
