Exclamation 98 Auto Transmission refill

I have a 98 4 Runner, automatic v6. I was changing out the auto trannie fluid, and refilled it with the 2.1quarts (1.98l) as per the book. Well it didn’t even register on the stick, hot or cold as per checking as the book says, with the engine warm, after 10 mins driving, on a flat surface with the engine at idle.

So I added some more fluid, drove her some to warm it up, and repeated a couple times. Now i have 3.3l (3.48 us quart) and when warm it shows on the min part of the cool reading.

Am i missing something? Was there a cooling option or something for this auto trannie? There appears to be 2 radiators on the front, 1 obviously for the engine, the other in front of it, aprox the same size for what i do not know.

The dip stick for the trannie, is all bent out of shape, and a pain to get it all the way in. I tried to straighten it up as much as i can, is this normal, and could it make that much difference reading it?

The book says not to overfill it, because it can foam and cause damage, but yet it took way more fluid for it just to read on the stick. Could there be a trannie cooler, and it needs more fluid? Or am i missing something?

thanks
Arron

And the 2nd link brought up the 4x4 wire page commonly posted on here.

A drain and refill on my 01, which has the same tranny, takes about 3.5 - 4 litres. The book is wrong.

And that front 'radiator' is your A/C condensor.

roughly 4 quarts will come out when you drain your auto tranny. The same amount should go back in when you refill it. The users manuals do not specify the correct amount. There are many threads on here about that.

No problem. Even the Factory Service Manuals have multiple typos or errors in them, so I always do a search on here first to see what the consensus is before starting a job I've never done before.
