Its strange that you asked about Ford vs. Toyota-- you pretty much picked the two total opposites. I work on cars for a living and see some stuff you wouldnt want to know about ( well maybe you should ) If you take the radio out of a toyota, you will notice that it is clean--no dirt on top of it. Doing the same thing with any ford vehicle ( even Jaguar now ) and the radio is covered in a half inch of dirt-- now dont ask me how so much dirt got into the ford, but it is there. I personally know many ford GM and chrysler mechanics that dont want to work on their own cars, so most of them own a toyota ( no kidding ) And if anything goes wrong with the a toyota, any mechanic in the world knows how to fix it-- not so with some of these funky ford or GM products. Keep in mind that it is a well known fact that any Ford vehicle is the most serviceable car on the road, meaning something WILL break--its just a question of when.

I find it interesting that the highway safety board says that the 4runner is poor in crashes, but the tacoma is the safest light truck ever made....hmmm, somethings fishy here. Not to mention on the inside of a 4runner door , there are brace bars welded to the doors that keep you from getting squished-- looking inside of an explorer you wont find them. But seriously, there are other cars that will work for you-- you just picked the two ends of the spectrum, the absolute worst and the best

(Dont get me wrong, I am all for the 4Runner)
Heh eh - I went and search for 4Runner over at that Ford fourm and even some of those guys give a nod to the 4Runner:

In the past 6 weeks, 4 guys have crashed their rigs. (from this forum) All 4 walked w/ no serious injuries.

Nuff said.

I love (the fact that you can do something with it!) what you do for me!

A ford explorer can.....what?

why do you think you have to get an older 4runner compared to a 99explorer? resale value on that 99 will drop lower than the 4runner next year...

My dad got an Exploder through work. It's okay, I guess. I am certainly not going to argue, because when he didn't need his '89 Toyota Pickup anymore, guess who got to take it off his hands for much less than it's worth?

Never driven a 4runner, but i've been loving my truck. Go out and do some test-driving of both cars and see what you like more. I personally would go with the Toyota. I am constantly comparing my dad's Explorer to my truck, there's a ten year's difference (my truck is older, obviously), and I wouldn't trade my dad even up for the Explorer .

Maybe my bias against Explorers comes from the fact that it seems like people who drive em are so careless. I've been almost run off the road by one, almost backed into by one, almost run over by one, and almost rear-ended by one.

That's ok, I watched a guy try to cross the Verde river in one and hydro-lock his engine halfway out (as water was flowing over his hood mind you!)

Lesson learned for him, dont while

Good grief!
