So, my check engine light came on the other day. Since it's gotten colder, I've noticed it running rough first thing in the morning, as well as acting kind-of flooded when I first take off untill it warms up just a bit. Then it clears out. Anybody had issues with leaking injectors or something like that? Thats what it seems like. I dunno if that'd turn on the SES light?

 

Go to Autozone and get the code pulled. It should be stored even if the CEL isn't on at the time.

 

Yeah, go up to your dealer or AutoZone and get it pulled...it'll say exactly what is wrong.

Don't worry about the rough running in the morning, thats probably just your rig gettin used to the cold weather...mine can be kind of a pansy too. It's mainly just really loud when I first start her up but after a few miles it gets better.

and... what scanner were you thinking of buying?

If you're gonna get JUST a code puller then make sure you get one that will let you clear the code as well - not all will.

If you're willing to spend $100 and have a laptop, then think about getting a full OBDII _reader_, not just a code puller. Like this one from OBD Diagnostics.

If you're up for spending $250 and have a Palm (or want something more for the laptop) then look at the Auterra products.

I don't think I'll buy one. I can go down and get a loner OBD II scanner from O'reilly's. They require a $200 deposit that you get back when you return it undamaged. I hope I don't need a scanner often enough to buy one!!

I get the same thing in my '96 2wd SR5. My code reads ECU BATT. Is that saying that my ECU capacitor is dying? Could someone give me a good contact for an ECU, or at least a parts list with the part #?

I agree that an OBD II reader/reset is a good investment. Betwen my SR5 and my SVX, mine has more than paid for itself!

About a year ago, he and I became involved in a TON of OBD II discussions where folks were looking to get a code puller/reader/scanner/etc. At the time, we seemed to have become the local YT OBD II people and found ourselves answering all of those threads. It got to the point that we were just cut & pasting our responses from one thread to the next.

 

It's a pretty busy subject, the OBD II and I. Any ideas on ECU part #s? I've searched the top 10 Google responses with no luck.....

Also, can a ECU from a 4X4 be used on a 2wd?

Cool. So do you guys know all the codes...have a code book or something? I'll be needing to know that stuff soon. I think once I get the loner scanner, I'll have 48hrs to use it and get it back. So I'll have to find out what the codes are pretty quick.

I'll bet that you could find something there to help you out. (hint: look for "OBD" on that page)

.....but don't expect it to do more than just give you a number (and it went up $10 too, used to be $39!)

Or you can have a shop hook it up and pull them for you (usually costs 1 hr shop labor, but ask).

Well, I went to get that loner scanner...and it was loned out. Imagine that! I didn't have time to go over to one of the other stores and get theirs. I dunno if I'll mess with it today, I think it's about 7* outside, and not suppposed to get much warmer than that!

 

My shop just pulls the code for free, but I'm not sure if they do that for the general public or it's just cause they know me but Autozone will do it for free...thats what I would do.

Well, I got the code pulled. It's the bank #1 O2 sensor. My buddy at the dealership here said he'd sell me one for $110 and they retail for $165. I figured I'd rather pay 110 for a OE sensor than 125 for a Bosch anywhere else!

One funny thing I found out is that Autozone will pull codes for you but won't clear them. The guy said it's because people would go to Autozone, get their codes cleared then go get a state inspection. Kinda funny.
