the stock turbos weren't the greatest units. they wore out pretty quick(most under 100k from what i hear) and are very expensive to rebuild/replace. i think the popular replacement/upgrades are the turbo from a later model supra, or a garrett t3.

He the son of Charlie from Charlie's Chicken.

But anyways, if you suspect the turbo you can buy a rebuild kit and rebuild it yourself. There is really nothing to it. I could lend a hand if needed.

Or, you could drop it off at Thompson Diesel in Tulsa and have them rebuild it.

Well if you are only getting 3-4 bars on the dash then your not getting anything for boost. My truck with 7 psi will almost pin the lights 10 psi will pin them 1/2 way through the gear. Im guessing cracked or blown turbo/boost leak.check the gasket that comes out of the compressor and in to you pipe that thing has broken once on mine already also check out the rubber piece that s on the end that connects it to the t-body. mine at 200k has been replaced once cause they dry out and crack.Mine happened on the bottom....looked for hours to find the leak and when i found it i replaced it with a samco piece i had layin around.Pull the pipe off and check blow by with the turbo also pull the pipe off that goes to the mas air and check for shaft play.Im guessing that turbos done for. the other thing you might look at IF theres no blow by no shaft play and the housings not cracked then make sure the wastegates opening. if you have any kind of aftermarket cat back or muffler im sure you can hear it cause even stock oost mine sounds like a jet.If everything there checks out ok (my money says you found it already)then i would try O2 or mas air. Do you have a boost gauge? If you can get your hands on one even to ziptie in for a quick run i would try it its like a 2 second install and easy to remove. my turbo stock before i messed with the wastegate was at 8psi and 9ish on colder nights now im getting 10 in the heat and 13 in the cold with spikes when the truck shifts(auto).

if you have more trouble feel free to shoot me an IM me. Good luck with the runner.....and just wondering what you will be asking for it when its running again,Im a chicken sh!& and am scared to mod mine lol

my turbo

Actually, I'm in Broken Arrow and am completely new to offroading. I've owned two MR2s for about seven years now and have just started getting the 4Runner itch.

VW, probably ask 2800ish for it.

Red, I know where a nice pickup down here is that is for sale... 84 ext. cab flat bed, new paint, 79 running gear, solid front axle, no rust anywhere, frame's been off for cleaning and painting, new paint on the cab, runs great, 35's asking 2500.

Hey Cory, keep an eye out for me too! I've decided the 97 is too nice to mod or wheel too much.

Wow, that's awful nice of you. A 1st gen 4Runner with a 22RE and manual tranny would be right up my alley.

Hey TEC is about an hour from my house(golden CO right?) if you want i can try to set up an account with them and get the parts cheaper.i know if you give them your tubo they will rebuild it for like $400 or i still have to check around but i was told theres a guy selling t3 super 60's for 300 new and there bearing turbos im going to call tomorrow for one for myself. Now that my motors bored and the head works done my truck is kinda starved for boost.and the stock ones working way to hard.I will let you know if i can get more i would be willin gto share that deal if people are interested in them...just have to pay shipping

Yeah, Cory's a good guy. 4cyl 5spd here too, preferrably rough & cheap. Looking for a winter project.

Red, not sure what you're looking to spend, but there's a pretty decent looking one for 2500 in OKC listed on autotrader. I have some additional pics they emailed me a few months ago that I can forward if you want. They had it listed at 3000 then. They may be willing to haggle since it's been listed so long.

I'm tempted to fly up to philly & get that 85 that's for sale for $850, just concerned about all the rust on the frame.
