Hi, I'm new to this board but it looks to be very active with intelligent people responding. I'm stumped with a pickup motor rebuild. Got everything back in but after setting timing the distributor will not advance beyond about 12 degrees no matter what the rpm. As far as I can tell the computer wiring is hooked up. Does this sound like a case of the computer not getting a signal that the engine is warmed up? Or is this some type of limp mode? The check engine light comes on when I short the connector to set initial timing and goes out when the jumper is removed. The motor rebuild was necessitated by severe detonation that knocked a dime sized chuck out of the #1 piston. We couldn't tell if it was caused by a leaking head gasket or timing issues. I'm really needing some input from you Toyota gurus. Thanks in advance, Bob

Found my problem! I had a bad connection in the TPS wiring where some yo-yo had spliced the new connector. Once I fixed that the timing had to be reset as did the idle. Now it wings the timing to 35 degrees easily!
