AS for you original question of what model etc.
Here's some general info:
ALL 85s have either 22R or 22RE. (see below)
ALL 85s have solid axle.
ALL 85 4Runners have 4wd. It was only recently they decided to build the station wagon model i.e 2wd
ALL 85 4Runners have manual front hubs. (In 85 the only auto hubs were in Xtracabs.)
The auto in the 85 is excellent. (IF it's been taken care of properly, like any auto.) But it's still lame - it's an AUTO fer Chrissake...
Here's a few details that will help you ID the one you're looking at:
In 85 the 4Runner came in Standard, Deluxe, and SR5.
The SR5 has an SR5 badge on the tailgate.
The SR5 has a tach and real guages, the others do not.
The SR5 upholstery had "SR5" woven into the fabric design.
The SR5 had EFI - ALL of them did.
The SR5 has a tall console and a rear seat heater in it.
THe SR5 had 2 piece fold down rear seats with carpeted backs.
The SR5 had lots of other little things that were better too, like tilt wheel.
The SR5 rear bumper was a step bumper.
The SR5 had chrome steel wheels
The Deluxe has a Deluxe badge on the tailgate.
The Deluxe had a plain cloth interior
The Deluxe had EFI - ALL of them did.
The Deluxe console is tall like the SR5 but has no rear seat heater.
Most Deluxes had factory back seats, but again not all. All factory rear seats were split fold down models. Many had port-installed aftermarket interiors with back seats. Most of those were not split. (They were imported with no rear seats as trucks.)
The Standard has no badge on the tailgate.
The Standard had vinyl seats, and many had no factory back seat at all.
The Standard had a short console.
Most Standards were carbureted - 22R but not all - the very last of the 85 Standards had 22RE also.
The Standard came standard with black grill. Chrome was not an option.
The Standard rear bumper was a straight flimsy panel.
If you have the choice, now that they are 20 years old, I would look for an '85 SR5 5-speed with power windows, intermittant wipers, cruise control, air conditioning, 8 way seats, no sunroof unless it's perfect (they rust out - look closely at it.) For the record they did not have power mirrors or door locks.

Thanks Flamedx4 and everyone else with helpful info... I'll be taking a good look at it on Tuesday.... As far as the tranny goes - I'm only going to run 31's so it should be OK..This truck is only to keep me away from breaking my wifes 4Runner. And for those of you who keep putting down the 3.0, you can stop because I've had no problems with mine.....

I actually really like mine. Sure, it doesn't have the hp of my V8 in the big pickup - but I drove a 22RE for 15 years. The 3.0 is just fine, and at 214k mi. it still runs perfectly.

thats not the point, for what it is the 3.0 is a turd. (not that powerful , poor gas mileage.) maybe it runs great, but fixing it is more expensive, thats still not the point,
the point is, with the 3.0 you get a chain driven transfercase. and a transmission that dosent work with the gear driven transfercase (weaker). so drop in 4low gearswaps are out of the question.
that is the same thing with an auto, sure its a turd, but thats not the point, you get a chain driven tcase. with the same problems as the above post.
do what you want, but im saying i would not buy either.

Get what you want, Don't settle for any rig. (props to waskillywabbit)
I paid $1100.00 for my 85, knowing I'd have to replace the engine.
It has an slush-box auto tranny, but lemme tellya, after 20 years of pushing a clutch, it is a pleasure to drive with ONE FOOT.
If you were to ask me today if I would got through it all again, I would say "Hell yeah!" (like the idiot I am)

Well it turns out I won't be getting it. My wife decided that after the last little bit of trail damage she wanted another vehicle, so I got her a 94 Taurus 3.8l V6 fully loaded with 156 000km certified and e-tested for $1160(out the door). As far as cars fo this is very nice. I may still look at it later, but my extra cash is kinda tied up now...(I may get it)
