85 with 22RE, or 86 with 22RTE?

Fellas,
First of all, my name is Christian. I've been running a Montero for a couple years now, but it had just recently been stolen. Now i need some help deciding between two toys.

Been searchin and i need some help with a decision. I need to decide between an 85' 22RE 4runner or a 86' 22RTE 4runner. One has power, one has solid axle. One has 5 speed, one doesn't. Can you guys help me make this decision? How does the power compare between the two? It's a lot easier to build the 85'.

My intent for this vehicle is something that can take me to school one day, take me to my favorite fishing hole the next, And take me to do some wheelin with some Jeeps, and have them try to keep up. I know about the SAS that is possible and am willing to do that, but i heard about t-case gears on the 22rte being impossible to reduce because the tranny and tcase were together. I'd like to one day run 35's, easier on the 85'.

I'd say 80% on road, 20% Off.

I'm just stuck in the middle, any input would be greatly appreciated, thanks guys!

Christian

Have you driven both types? When I was first looking for a 1st gen., I had the opportunity to test drive a 22re 4runner first and then the 22rte I ended up purchasing. There is a major difference in power. The '86 will do fine on the dirt roads and will be a lot more powerful when you step on it. I'm a little bias since I miss my 22rte runner. Also, check out Jeff's site to see what he has done with his little 22rte truck. 22rte site

If you want to explore all that's out there beyond the pavement get the '85. The turbo motor requires a lot more attention and the '86 front suspension sux.
