My local dealership offers two free oil changes a year for Toyotas over 100,000 miles. Last night was the first time I took advantage of this as I've always changed my own, but I just saw on the receipt that they used 5w-20. My 4Runner calls for 5w-30. Is this ok? Why would they use that weight? I'm in Houston.

Being that it is not too hot now ( 70's F ) , and the temp is due to drop this weekend, it might be allright. All I have seen using that weight is modern Fords, and our rigs call for 5W30 or 10W30.



I don't think I would panic, but I would certainly ask them if they are willing to refill it w/ 5W30 for free. That 20W just seems awful thin
to me.

Worse comes to worse, change the oil on your own, and leave the OEM filter, I guess.

Yes my comment was meant as to ask why you did not look at the receipt before you left.

Did you think to specify 5w-30 ??

Could be 5w-20 is what you get unless you state 5w-30.

Now being the lot person is doing the Free Changes perhaps he or she just grabbed the nearest oil dispenser .

Then it could also be just how the computer defaults to a oil for the Free Oil change.

So it comes down to either driving by and asking the Service Manager in person or using the phone and calling.

All new toyota's use that oil now. It's good oil, I run it in my Land Cruiser with the 3UZ-FE. They use now due to CAFE standards for better fuel mileage.

Your fine with it in there. The old thinking of thicker oil is better has proven to be wrong. Thinner oil flows better and Provides better lubrication and heat transfer.
