What are the diameter of valve shims for the 5VZ-FE. I presume that both intake and exhaust are the same diameter.

Seeing nobody seams to know the outside diameter of the 5VZ-FE valve shims, I will have to guess at it. Toyota dealership's cannot answer this question.

Based on 3VZ-E lifter bore is about 37.9mm and shims are 34mm. 5VZ-FE lifter bore is about 31mm - 4mm = 27mm.

Just wish there was not a choice between 28mm and 27mm.

The only way you'll know how thick of a shim you'll need is if you pull out the shim and measure the thickness, and while its out for that, measure the diameter.

unless you have a special circumstance.

since i'm from a small town I ended up using yamaha/honda shims since we don't have anyone else locally who would have them.

 

Presently working in Drayton Valley

Out towards Oyen, otherside of the province. Toyota dealership is 2 hours away, Calgary is 3 hours each way.

If I take it apart, measure shims, order parts not a problem. But when I did a 3VZ-E engine all worked fine but two valves took a couple of tries. That would make two maybe even three trips to the dealership. Buy a kit would be covered, gas would pay for it.

Now I just got to get the 98 4Runner MPG up to 93 Pickup. 5VZ-FE is faster but 3VZ-E still gets better fuel economy.

I have no idea if this will help you out at all, but here's the FSM pages with shim information for 5VZFE.

 

I can make an educated guess for you, if that helps. They're more than likely 28mm.

Based on:

1. The 2RZ/3RZ has the exact same size lifter bores as a 5VZ. And it uses 28mm shims. So why wouldn't a 5VZ?

2. The only place that I know of that sells shims(aside from Toyota) says that 28mm and 34mm are for Toyota. They also sell 25mm, 27mm, 31mm, and 33mm shims(but they don't say they're specifically for Toyota). I would presume that, since they sell an early VW/Audi adjusting tool, those shim sizes are for VW/Audi vehicles. Make sense?

3. I know for a fact that the 3VZ-E uses 34mm shims.

 

If you're still looking for the diameter, it's 28mm. I have my 3.4L heads apart right now, troubleshooting a low compression in the #1 cylinder. I was surprised to find that the dealership wanted $9 or more per shim, so I've been trying to find a cheaper route. I found that http://www.regismanufacturing.com has the shims for $3.98 a piece. They offer sizes 2.50-3.30mm. Hope this info helps someone out!
