Nevermind - I found them. I guess I was just being lazy. Thank you very much for posting those. Those were the same pics that the tech at Big Two Toyota Stealership in Chandler, AZ was using to lie to me and tell me he tested the actuator and it was burned out.

I think i'll just replace my sensor too. If it doesn't fix it..o'well. It's $36. Glad to hear yours is fixed!

4WD Update

I replaced the front diff switch today (PN 84222-35070) and low and behold the 4WD works like it is supposed to - It even comes out of 4WD too.

Not being a "Certified" Toyota Technician it's amazing that I was able to fix the 4WD problem for $46.00 and an hour's worth my time. Compared to the cost before and the week the stealership had the truck, it was a small inconvenience. I am very glad my fellow YT users were there to help.

I am taking the bad front diff switch to Big Two Toyota in Chandler, AZ and I am going to pitch a stink with the Service Manager and try to get my money back for the $466.15 from before. I can't imagine they will be as cooperative with me as one would hope but we shall see.

Just an update to the group, Big Two Toyota did make things right and refunded the full amount of the initial repair that failed to fix the 4wd. The Service Director was very helpful and even came here to YT because he had not heard of this fixing the problem.

This thread was a very interesting read, Im glad to hear everything worked out for the best on top of that you got your money back. I just hope I have the same luck when it comes to fixing the transmission/clutch problems Im having with my 4X4 Tacoma.

I am in the same boat right now.... 4WD light blinks ALL the time and I am unable to get it in 4WD. Just 2WD no matter if its 4Lo, 4Hi, etc...

I'll take alook at this sensor...if you got pics, etc please send them my way...please shoot me a PM.

This problem is with the 4wd not dis-engaging. Mine blinks forever like it didn't go into 4wd but I can feel that it is indeed in 4wd. With the recent snow and ice mine is still in 4wd after 2 days! Usually it disengages after a few hours or the next day.

I'm going to Toyota tomorrow to buy the part. It's never been stuck this long. Anyone have any pics of the part i'm going to be changing or pics of where it is located? How long does it take to change and how hard is it to change. I have access to a lift. Thanks.

Well I applied 12v 2A to pins 2 and 3 and she came out of 4wd right away. My actuator is good. I called toyota for the front diff switch and they didn't have it in stock. It'll be here tomorrow. $45 and some change.

Can anyone post some pics of the removal of this sensor, etc??? I am an idiot. My truck never went into 4wd, so do you think its the sensor or a vacuum line?

The light flashes, and won't stop. Stuck in 2wd.

I don't have a pic, but I can tell you its on the back side of the front diff. You will be very close to the steering rack when your doing this swap. Its tight, but doable.

IIRC - Crawl under your truck, pull of the skid plate and then crawl under from d-side of truck. As you look up towards the front diff, the sensor will be closer to the center of truck on the front diff (closer to top of front diff). There is an electrical connection so you should be able to spot it. Once you get it loose, it comes off easily and you will get some fluid drip. Screw in the new one then tighten it. Its tight getting a wrench in there so you may want a ratchet.

Chalk up another 4runner 4wd system fixed! I replaced the part today, it took me all of 10 minutes. It was tight but I was able to get a 1/2" drive ratchet in there with a 27mm socket. Once I put the new one in i tried out the 4wd and it works perfectly! multimode, 4hi, 4lo all work awesome. Thanks!!!!!

Hello from sunny AZ! I have a 99 4x4 Limited Supercharged and it has been taking longer and longer to get into or out of 4x4... My dog hit the button a week ago and it caused the 4x4 to stay in limbo... hubs were locked, but light on the dash just kept blinking. I did a search for the problem, and found this thread.

Crawled under the truck, removed the skid plate, and located the actuator. Switch was located just left of the actuator. Didn't have a 27mm to remove it, so pulled out the trusty vice grips. Got it right out. I then tested switch with a meter, and there was no change with the switch plunger depressed or not.

Called my closest stealership, they didn't have it, but another across the city did, and they had a runner get it for me the next day.
Part number 84222-12010, List was $77.48. Part is called Transfer indicator Switch.

Less than 10 minutes to reinstall it, another 5 for the skid plate, and 5 more minutes to test drive the truck. It works perfectly, better than it did when I bought it 4 years ago.

Just wanted to tell my story, and give my gratitude to those who posted the fix . Thank you all for helping the rest of us!

I’m having a problem getting into 4HI and 4LO with my 2001 Tundra. Light blinks for 4HI but doesn't go into 4HI (as best I can tell).

Interesting. This evening I did a quick run with the truck and I was able to get it into 4HI; I heard it go into 4HI and the light stayed on as 4HI. I suspect the cool temps somehow affect the sensors/switches. But once the truck warmed up I couldn't get it out of 4HI (no sound and the light kept blinking). Go figure. I hope I can tomorrow morning.

I think the sensors/switches are close to shot (or at least don't work correctly when warmed up).

Regardless, I plan on replacing any switch/sensor related to the issue.

Great post and thanks to everyone that contributed. I only wish I would have found this thread 2 years ago. Dealer quoted me 2k to fix......so I have been manually switchin the vacuum hoses between 2wd and 4wd.

I just ordered the switch part number 84222-35070. Just to make sure....this is what I am swapping correct?



Few questions:
To jump it, will a 12v 1amp battery charger be enough to jump the switch?
Is the switch "plug and play" to replace?

Interesting thread, I have a variation on this, my 4wd engages, and disengages fine, two blinks at most, but once I press the 4wd button (99 Limited multimode)
It will blink and blink, and sometimes engage somtimes not usually not.

Sometimes it will blink once then show it engaged. It disengages fine too. Any ideas what I should look at/start trouble shooting?
Sounds to me like a dirty actuator?

I really wish I had a Toyota FSM

Sorry if this is a slight hijack, but i did a search and nothing good came up.
