Question 4WD question/problem

hello
I have a 02 tacoma 5speed with auto hubs and manual 4wd shifter..
if I am in 2wd parked should the front wheel axles spin freely? the 4wd shaft spins free from the transfer case but I am not sure if the wheel axle shafts should spin free ..I think they should but they dont.
can someone please check and let me know..

Are you sure you have auto hubs on an '02? Or do you have splined flanges? If you really have auto hubs, then I can't help you. If you have flanges like most other people, then your axle shafts are fixed to your wheel hub, so no they will not rotate independently from your wheel.

If you raise the front of your truck up, you should be able to rotate the front wheels (the axle shafts will spin with the wheels).

The driveshaft is doing what it is supposed to... spinning freely from the transfer case and front diff when in 2WD.

I was assuming I had auto hubs. I am just trying to acct for a decrease in mpg.on my 84toyota I had a hub stuck in the locked position even though it said free. so I assume that my 02 was doing the same thing...
thank you for replying.

ah... OK. You more than likely just have flanges, and your axles will spin all the time. You might get another MPG or two with manual hubs, but the big advantage to having them is wear-n-tear on your CV axles. You can unlock the hubs and not be spinning your axles all the time.

Are you still on your original front O2 sensor on the truck? That's a common MPG robber on our trucks... even before they throw a code.
