4WD problems
I'm having some problems with my 4WD system. It's the first snow of the year and I can't seem to get my 4WD to engage. I have a 2001 automatic 4 runner. When I click the button for 4WD, the green wheel light with the orange light in the middle keep blinking and I'm clearly not in 4WD. I've tried backing up and going forward to get it to engage. It finally seemed to engage but the orange light in the center of the green wheel lights stayed solid orange and the vcs track light came on. There are no other warning lights on. Last year the 4WD was having trouble shifting out and the car got towed to the shop when I could not back out of a parking spot no matter what I did. They said they had to bang on the T case to get it to work but I should get a couple more years out of it. Any advice on what's going on?

Well you should have looked into this say last summer!
It sounds like the activation switch on the transfer case not closing and sending power the the ADD motor. I had this happen but didn't let some monkeys beat on the transfer case in an abortive attempt to troubleshoot. Or it could be the control module, the relay or ADD motor. The switch is cheap(er) and easy to put in. Test it out with your multi-meter first. Getting the connector off is 75% of the battle...clean it all off first spotlessly!

Make a pot of coffee and clear you Saturday so you can skim thru this thread:

The most common cause for 4wd activation or deactivation failure is the position switch on the front differential. The next most common fault is the contact traces for the transfer case shift actuator. You can read my build thread, I have some pics of the transfer case parts.
