Unhappy 4wd light does not come on

Hi
I am going offroad later today and noticed that when I tested my 4wd the light in the dash did not come on. I read out possible vacuum hose problems on 2nd gens, is that the same for 3rd gen?

Is there an easy way to test whether the 4wd is working, I will need it this afternoon.

What year is your truck? When i had a '91 chevy I always had problems with the 4wd actuator making a good contact with its autolocking hubs. I eventually wound up splicing and soldering the wires together to get rid of that problem.

So then you do have autolocking hubs, the actuator should screw in somewhere on the front axle and should have two wires coming out of it. I would start by disconecting it and testing the voltage going to it. out of 4wd and then in 4wd and see if you get a current change and also try to clean up the contacts down there.

What about just driveing around a bit in 4wd then jack up the front and give it gas and see if the front wheel turns? Then start checking the other stuff.

edit: I guess you'd have to jack the back up also, otherwise the truck would take off on you. :pat:

If you do it the jackstand way, I don't recommend it, just make sure that you don't have anything near it that you don't run over. That way if you get on the gas too much and the torque from your engine somehow manages to imbalance your truck enough you don't destroy something you still like or use.

Cool all good

Hi
I took the runner to a dirt lot and after going forth and back between 2H and 4H the light went on. To check if 4wd was engaged I tried spinning all tires on the dirt and noticed skids from both front and back tires.

So I went offroad with RobT2K and co. (any pics yet Rob?). Lots of fun.

Thanks for the input, if the problems reoccur I will take a look at the wiring.
