4wd actuator does not operate when cold

I have a 2002 4Runner that will not stop flashing the center instrument cluster light when trying to engage 4wd when it is cold and snowy. The 4wd will will complete actuation when It is warm outside.

How do I test the operation of this system to determine what component is faulty?

Define cold a little better ??

Like below 0 F or colder ??

Below Freezing ??

Then how often do you shift into 4x4 lots of time condensation can freeze causing these things

Things tend to stick from not being used

Vacuum switching valves like to stick from not being used.

The fact it works in warmer temperatures leads me to think it is freezing or just sticking from not being engaged.

4WD actuator

Not below freezing. Like 32-35 degrees F. I live in the Foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mtn range in California. I mainly use the 4wd for snow and the occasional offroad. I shift into 4WD at least a couple times a year.

Is there anything I can do to clean or lubricate to keep from happening?

Thanks

When it is warm enough engage it several times .

You can look at lines if they are getting dry and brittle maybe time to change.

Does it work every time when it is warm out??

Normally good advice, but...

He has an '02 4Runner. No vacuum to the ADD. It was all electric, TC and front diff, in '01 and '02.

There is a troubleshooting routine in the FSM for the electric ADD actuator, but the site won't let me post it since i already put it in here:

https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f2/4...er-ltd-131201/

Remember, none of the stuff about VSV;s or vacuum actuators applies to you.
