4runner manual hub conversion question
I found a guy who is selling a 98 4runner front axle with "locking hubs", thats all the ad says. I'm assuming that he is talking about manual hubs and he said he would check in the morning. I know it's a fair amount of work to swap over to the manual hubs and keep the abs. I asked if he had done that work and he said he didn't and it came like that. He bought a rolled 4runner to replace his engine and is parting it out. I am pretty sure that no 3rd gen 4runners came with manual hubs but am I right? Also what would I have to check on the axle to see if it is set up for abs to still work? If you've got them pics are great. Thanks.
edit: Here is the ad picture if it helps at all

No 4Runners ever came with manual hubs only base model Tacomas. It all depends on how it was converted. All you need to do, to retain the ABS with manual hubs is the ABS tone ring pictured here. Its the outer ring with teeth.
Taking it apart is another story, as you will need a special tool which I still have laying around.
If the whole setup was simply swapped over from a tacoma, then you will need to dissemble both knuckles, will need two new wheel bearings, access to a 20 ton press to swap everything over.
Here are some pictures for reference.
Manual hub spindle
No ABS tone ring on the manual hub or port for ABS sensor

To be honest, the stuff in the op picture doesn't even look like Tacoma/ 4Runner parts.
Looks more like pre taco- torsion par IFS which is not compatible with a Tacoma or 3rd gen. Op, can you see if he can get better close up pics of the diff and the spindles?

Yea, after closer inspection of that very crude picture, that stuff is definitely pre taco IFS stuff. There are bolts holding the cv to the flange on the jack shaft side and there are bolts around the front of the diff.
The tricky part is that the picture is taken with everything upside down so it gives the appearance that it is a drivers side drop setup.

Ok so I called the guy right now and asked if he was sure it was from a 98. His reply was either 98 or 88. What?! So I asked him what engine he has and he said 22re. Good job Scuba. I didn't catch that from the picture. He only wanted $100. Too good to be true. Thanks for all the pics iceman. That helped a lot.
