the advantage of using 4-lo on trails is that you have more gears to choose from between the speeds of 0mph and 20mph so it is much easier to find a gear that is just right for the terrain you are moving on. (i.e, you can use 1 through 4 instead of just 1st and 2nd).

i actually don't use 4-hi much at all except in snow. if find in most other cases, anything i can drive over 20mph on i usually don't need 4wd for.

I use 4hi for heavy rains sometimes, not that i need it so much, but it helps when water pools on the roads, and in snow and ice, which is rare. I dont use it off road except on flat easy roads and trails that are a little slippery. Everything else, i usually need 4low for the extra power, the gears take pressure off the transsmission. I had a friend one time, climb the steepest hill ive seen in a while, and when he got to the top i smelled clutch and i asked him and he said he was in 4hi, i did the same hill climb in 4 low and didnt slip the clutch at all. i agree that 4low is best for most situations.

When driving in 4Low my 4runner (96 v6 auto limited) shifts quite abruptly. Like, knock you out of your seat abrupt. Is this just due to the low gearing, or is something wrong?
