Hey guys,

I am draining the front diff on my 1996 3rd gen and I need to know what size the allen drain plug is?

One of the tech writeups says it should be 11mm but the 10mm spins freely so I am not sure an 11mm will work. Can someone who had done this before please get back to me so I can get the right tool and finish the job. :pat:

Also let me know where you got one because I checked everywhere and all I could find was the 10mm socket.....

The allen hole is pretty big, I want to say 15 mm maybe? I ended up going to Sears, they sell individual Allen wrenches of larger size. I wish I could tell you exactly what the size is, but I'm at work at the moment.

Toyota changed the front diff plugs somewhere around '98. I don't know what your '96 is. But on my '00 they are definitely 10mm. Sorry that didn't help you, but hopefully it'll help someone else.

 

Yup! It's gonna help ME! I plan to switch t-case and both diffs to synthetic this Friday and I'm glad to hear that I won't have to buy another tool (I have 10mm and was going to by 11mm)!

 

On my 96, one of the plugs on the front diff is a 10mm and the other is a 12mm.

I think Bob's writeup needs to be updated because he mentions an 11mm but really it is a 12mm that people need.

Thanks also to Jeff the marmot for pointing out the switch was on the 99 and up version. So all you guys wanting to change your diff fluids and have a 96-98 need both a 10mm AND a 12mm to do the job.
