Is there any difference in rear driveshafts, say from 96-98 and 99...all V6?

This is for a 97 2wd to 4wd conversion and I got a driveshaft from a 99 4runner and it seems like its about 4 inches short? I measured the distance from the front of the bellhousing to the rear differential drive flange currently on the vehicle and it comes out to be 88 inches.

I then connected the 99 driveshaft to my a340f transmission that came out a 98 Taco, measured the same way and its 84"....Am I missing something here?

Would anyone happen to have some actual pictures to compare?

 

The propeller shaft for those with multi-mode transfer case are shorter by a few inches because the multi-mode transfer case is longer than the regular transfer case.

VZN185L rear propeller shaft part numbers:
37110-3D250 ---> July 98 to Aug 2000 Limited
37110-3D300 ---> July 98 to Aug 2000 SR5
37110-3D310 ---> Nov 95 to Aug 2000 M/T
37110-3D350 ---> Aug 2000 to Aug 2002

 

Yup....just found that out.... a little too late. Fully compressed it measures at 45"

Now I'll have to sell these and get the correct one

Depending on cost considerations you can have a driveline shop retube it to make it the right length. And you can upgrade to thicker wall tubing while your at it. It's a 4wd now right? Can't hurt to add a little beef to that driveshaft.

I had mine done recently and it cost me $150 to go to 0.095 wall tubing and have it rebalanced, stock is around .065. My stocker was bent anyway, u-joints were fine and reused.

 

Its still in 2wd right now....was planning on doing the swap next week, but I guess it will have wait a little now.

I'd figure it will be easier just to sell this one and find the correct one as I don't know any reputable shops around me to do it.

 

the rear propeller shaft of the 4WD 4Runner uses double cardan joint at the transfercase so the old 2WD u-joints can't be used.
