3.4 swap questions

Ok i have done a search and not really found out a couple of things here so if anyone can answer this for that would be great. I have finally decided to do the 3.4 swap in my '95 Runner 4x4. First quesion is will 96-99 3.4 motors bolt up to my automatic trans, and does the motor have to be out of a auto or does it matter? Second quesions is does it matter if the donor Runner is 4x4 and will a 4x2 Runner be the same as the 4x4. Im searching for motors right now and just wanna make sure i get the right motor. I will be attempting this swap within the next 2 weeks or so and will keep you guys posted on my progress and will definately be taking pics, so i hope to have a good write-up when its all said and done. Im just trying to get all the info i can before i start the swap. So any info would be great if you guys can help me out. Thanks again

Using an auto means that you should be able to use any 3.4 from 96 to 02 out of a runner or a Taco.

Your tranny and the tranny from the 3.4 have the same bolt pattern AFAIK. Might be some subtlety I am missing on that though. If you can get a good deal on the 3.4 with a tranny on it, might be a good time to get dual cases.

There is a dude here who is a month or so into the swap. Name is escaping me at the moment.

Thanks for the replies guys. Im looking at a 3.4 from a '96 Taco right now and the salvage yard said i could have it for $1500.00 including the computer and the harness. It has 58,000 miles on it. Does this sound like a good deal? And when i get working on the swap i hope to have lots of pics and a detailed write-up. is there anything i should be concerned about when looking at this motor?

I'd make sure the engine didn't come out of a rolled truck in case it sat upside down for a while. I just recently started my engine search as well. Really reminded me how badly I wanted to do it yesterday when I was pulling my ultralight on the trailer in a 40 mph headwind and I had to keep it mashed in 4th gear just to keep my speed going down the highway. Whenever I hit a hill I was losing speed.. It sucked badly!! I also burned up 1/2 tank of gas going 94 miles!!I was running her pretty hard though. The guy with the 2wd in the above link lives right down the road from me. I've talked to him on the phone but haven't met him or seen his truck yet. Hoping he will be able to help me out! Can't wait to see some pics of the swap in progess! Good luck and keep us posted.
