This CAN be a DIY repair. Just find a Runner with the same gearing in a scrap yard and get the third member. The gears will already be set up and swapping this unit requires no special tools (or skills) like a true gear change would.

I hate to say this.. but if you have a case of the "low idle shakes" you may want to have the compression checked.. These motors are buggers for bad valves.

As for the roar.. Are you sure it is not a siezed fan clutch?

Lee the bad valve king..

Well that sucks about having the compression checked and the possibility of bad valves.....

But about the roaring noise...i dont think it could be the fan clutch....because wouldnt that make it roar with the engine revs???

Yes on both counts.. It sucks, and yes it will roar louder reved.. But it will still roar at idle, bjust not as loud.. It also depends on how siezed it is.. My wife full sized van had one go out on it and she thought it would not shift into gear..

Sorry about my vague reply......i was trying to say that it could NOT be the fan clutch....since it wont roar with the revs of the engine....just speed of the car.....because i can sit there in park and rev the engine up all the way to the red line and no roar whatsoever....it starts at about 40mph, gets REALLY bad between 50 and 55 and subsizes to a slight roar/vibration going anything above 60.....but tends to get really bad again around 80-85......now going down the whole drivetrain trying to find where it is coming from.....cant be the engine because it does NOT roar with revs, tranny/tcase just replaced, both ujoints on rear driveshaft replaced, rear driveshaft balanced....seems to me the only thing left something in the rearend.....

I dont know if this will help with yall's suggestions.....but it all of a sudden started doing it about a year ago.....i was doing about 65 and had to make a very sudden lane change....i jerked to the right and back to the left and all of a sudden it started vibrating...it wasnt a very big vibration but i did think i had a back tire blow out.....

Which part of West Texas are you in? I think you need to have a buddy outside of the vehicle listen as you drive past him. That way he may be able to pinpoint the noise better. I could be wrong but a bad rearend should make noise all the time not just between certain speeds. Are your CV's in good shape? Check the front driveshaft, rear driveshaft, etc. You can stick your finger in the axle fill hole and see if there are metal shavings floating in the gear oil. Personally if it was the axle I'd replace the whole thing with one from a junkyard with the same gearing - those shaving can get into everything and despite the best cleaning under the truck you'll probably not get them all.

I live in Levelland, 30 miles west of Lubbock, TX.....it cant be coming anywhere from the front driveshaft, axle or differential....it HAS to be coming from the back....i jacked up the back on jackstands and spun the back tires and it made the noise then.....i wish i had a buddy to help me  haha...
