But oil near the bottom part of the head...

New puddle on ground, leaks getting bigger...

Oil on my fingers...

We use either oil dye or leak trace powder.I'm not sure where to buy it at,maybe a Napa store? If the leak is under the cylinder head are you sure it's the rear main?I would do everything possible to pin-point the leak before you spend dollars/time on replacing things(mechanics have been wrong before).

p.s.-what do you race ? (i love my 426)

375.00 is a heck of a bargain for a rear main seal... Pay the man.

Sorry for bringing my thread back from the dead...

Just wanted to see if anyone else had any input. Ive cleaned the engine but still cant pinpoint it. Its to the point of about 1 quart a week that leaks out.

If you need any pics of a paticular spot just let me know ok.

That doesn't look like oil to me. Because of where it is on the suspension and steering stabilizer I'd say its ATF fluid from the power steering pump, hoses etc. It even looks red color. The steering stabilizer isn't under the engine, so oil couldn't get there. Maybe its leaking less when the engine is on because the pump is "pulling" the fluid to it. I realize the fluid isn't under pressure on return to the pump, but there might be a very slight negetive pressure in the pump that keeps the fluid from leaking while the engines running.

Thats a good point and I have thought of that, but the resovoir isn't losing any fluid, yet the engine loses about a quart of oil a week.

I know what you mean about the rear main. I hauling up a mountain on nice sunny day with the sunroof open and rear glass down when I saw smoke out the rear. It went away (the initial burst of seal) and then started to see oil all over my rear view mirror that was being sucked inside on my seats and everything. Pulled over and the rear and underneath was covered in oil. The dealership that I made it to (far from home) charged me a fortune! I think I ended up paying like $600 for a damn $25 dollar part. I know what you feel

suggestion for oil leak

I have a 94 Runner V6. I had a hard to find oil leak also. It turned out to be the oil cooler. It is located on the driver's side of the engine near the bottom towards the front. I was told they are known for this.
By the way, the way the oil leaks from the cooler, it looks like it could be coming from the main seal. Good luck.
