I have 33x10.5 with 4:56 gears and a manny trans. I get 16-17 mpg on the highway. with 31x10.5, 4.56 and the man trans I was at 18-19 on the highway.

I have an auto trans 4WD with 134K on the clock. I have only ever run the 31" tires, and I average 15-16 mpg in all-around driving.

31 was stock for me. I was getting about 20 on the highway with 4.56 and manual trans before. My new tires are equivelent to 32's and I'm down to 17 sometimes 18 on the highway.

You and I are running the same tires (Long Trails). How many miles have you put on yours? I just checked and I am up to 58,000 and still have pretty good tread. I have been extremely pleased with them until recently when they have become more difficult to balance. Can't get rid of a vibration from around 55-65 mph, and so I am thinking about replacements.
(Sorry about hijaking this thread!)

when I got my truck in 2000 the guy had long trails on it and they were about a year and a half old but looked almost like new.. he put a lot of miles on it though so they prolly had around 20k on them then.

I drove another 15k on em before I got hit by a guy that was making a right on red, his bumper slashed the back tire which still would hold air but wasn't really safe.
They had a good bit of tread left then, but the insurance paid for all new wheels and two new tires. (the backs had the better tread cause they were just rotated) the fronts at around 1/4th left wanted to hydroplane easy, so a year later I got two more new ones.

the backs now have around 8k on em and the fronts around 4k. I was really sick for the past few years so haven't driven much.

anyway they are good tires and last a long time if rotated like they should be. I want to get some 32's in either an at or mt next though, so maybe I won't rotate these like I should

16-17 on mine, have only ran 4 tanks since I bought it, so the jury is still out on long trips. (31s from factory, 5 spd) The 89 p/u got 19 on the freeway!

That's what I am thinking about getting next, some 32's in 2005.

Did you have to do any mods to accommodate the 32's or did they fit OK without lifting?

they fit great without any mods or lifting. like i noted in a different thread, the only time i've felt any rubbing at all is when i'm backing up and have the tires turned almost to max. so i basically just avoid locking them out and i'm fine.

Used to get 20mpg with Long Trails. But watch them...I threw one tread on the LT's and a second was beginning to separate. Watch for ANYTHING that looks like a cut or a split on the sidewalls. They are strictly a light-duty, highway tire.

Now get a pretty consistant 19mpg on BFG AT's, synthetic fluids in engine, tranny, transfer case, front & rear diffs, and a 2.25 cat-back Magnaflow.

I don't think I ever got 20 mpg, even on the highway. Probably 18 max. But even though I still have decent tread remaining, two of them have been difficult to balance for some time, and are getting worse. When I bought them I didn't anticipate any really tough off-roading, just the occasional foray into the woods, on construction jobsites, and trips up north into snow country. Also 4WD LOW comes in handy on boat ramps. But I want to get into off-roading in the new year so I am going to look into a more aggressive tread, while trying to maintain good road manners and not get too noisy.
