in my 94 2wd 4runner i get about 245-245.5 miles per tankfull...

Does Anyone else's fuel gauge act like its got a mind of its own sometimes?

Mine Once in a while will move from the Half-way mark of 1/4 & the 1/2 tank line, to dead set on the E mark, and it will s tay there for a good 10min then it will go back to its normal spot...the funny part is that the low-fuel light doest turn on- when this happens.

How do y'all know when its Absolutely neccessary to get gas?My way of knowing is when i see that the Low-fuel light wont shut off when the 4runner comes to a complete stop and im not on the throttle..but if it goes away i know im still safe....hardly ever wait for this to happen but if i feel lazy and its late at night ill usse it

I am right thier with you on that one. That is the average mpg I get, with equates to ~ 300-320 miles per tank before I fill up. I usually do not ever see the low fuel light.

And I am due for a tune up; plugs, wires, PCV, air filter, etc...

In my '94 2wd 4runner, I don't have a low-gas light. I have a your-out-of gas light. When it comes on I better be pulling up to a gas station. Gesh.................

my 89 gets 23 hwy - 17/18 city.
just took at trip from IN to NC & SC after I replaced the timing belt & was my first long trip in the truck (typically do 2 hr drives to see family though) & was super impressed that it got 23 mpg!! with a 5 spd & crossing the blue ridge/smokies...couldn't ask for more!! I think the most I've pushed my luck was 300 miles before filling up though, but I start looking for gas around the 1/4 tank mark...

LSPOR = Long Skinny Pedal On Right.
When the ECU detects a bad knock sensor (or no knock sensor) it adjusts the spark timing to the point that getting any knock at all is difficult. This keeps you from pinging the engine to pieces before you can get the sensor fixed, but will cause a noticable power loss.

my buddy uses it when wheeling he said that "it switches the shift pattern to be controled by the ECU instead of the hydro shift" it gives you better shift points because on normal mode it runs off pressuse to shift and on ect the ecu controls the shift points

I wouldn't mess around with letting the tank get so low that you run out of gas. It can burn up your fuel pump.

I barely get over 200 miles per tank, but I'm very heavy with mods -- TJM bumper, roof rack, and probably a couple of hundred pounds of sound proofing material. It's also a 4x4 with 32" tires. The owners manual indicates the gas tank is only 15.5 gallons, so use that as your dividing numeral when figuring MPG averages.

You're going to find the knock sensor is a beeotch to replace. I believe you actually have to pull the engine since it's located under the bottom of the engine, not the top under the plennum. I have had two engine replacements in mine and both times the mechanic told me this is now the time to replace the knock sensor.

Your MPG sounds like it's a little low compared to those averaged by others, but it's better than mine and mine is running it top form right now. Get that sensor replaced and you should fare better, but it may be an expensive fix due to labor costs.

My driving was mainly backroad hilly terrain with minimal city driving. Even when I towed a 3000 lb. camper, my highway mileage was about 16mpg. I wouldn't say I have a lead foot, but I'm not granny, either!

And my 3rd gen gets about the same, 19.5-20 mpg, this time of year.

And once again, this miles per tank thing is garbage unless you run the tank empty or run it down to the same exact amount each time. Record your mileage each time you get gas and be sure to fill up. Subtract your previous fillup mileage from your current fillup mileage and divide by the # of gallons. THAT is a true indication of fuel mileage. I maintain a log and average it over the course of each month.
