285's with a body lift?
So, Ive got some plans for my 98 sr5, but need some help. Will 285/75/16's fit with only a body lift? If so, how big? 1" or2"? I realize that a body lift won't improve clearance or performance, but my tires are shot and I would like to go up to 285's now, and when finances allow get a Sonoran Steel system 1 lift. Also I know that if the tires will fit I'll need either spacers or new wheels, but what backspacing or spacer size? Thanks for your help.

i think you can get away with an inch spacer, or 4.5 BS'd wheels. they will tuck nicely in the wells. stock is 4.3ish(i think? someone correct me). some run stockers with 285's, but i think theyre lifted. alot of steelies are about 3-3.75ish and stick out a bit more (which is what most run). a BL should also clear 285's...id go with a 1.5" just to be safe though. its an easy install. which 285's you thinking about going with? when ya get em on...lets go out wheelin! err..maybe not in this much snow..
and your wrong..BL WILL give clearance...for your tires

Thanks for the quick reply Doubledown. Where would I begin to look for spacers in the lower mainland? I like the looks of the stock wheels, but if black steelies are cheaper... As for tires I'm leaning towards BFG A/T's. Yeah, too much snow right now...my truck is a white mound in the driveway. we've got about 10" since 6pm last night.

talk to taran over at bigcountrycustoms.com. i just got a quote from him. 1.5" are on sale $95+ tax/pair and in stock. im sure you could get a good deal on 2 pair if you want to run all 4. i think 1" are a tiny bit more, but he'd have to get em for ya.
steelies are cheap. im sure if youre getting a set of bfg's you should be able to get a good deal on steelies all at one shop. if you can spring for steelies instead of spacers..do that. then you'd have your stockers for a backup set if you need.
and yes... a rear diff locked in 2WD with MT/R's on snow is NOT the ideal winter setup..but it sure is fun!

Do you wheel the truck or just on the street?
A 2" BL allows for a 4" taller tire, so you should have no rubbing issues there, unless its on the aarm or frame.. A 1" BL allows for 2" bigger tires, so that should also work, and maybe just barely kiss at full turn and full stuff on the pinchweld.
A spacer or spring lift that isnt a bracket lift wont provide the clerance you need if you wheel the truck, you will need it and a BL to not rub. The BL is actually what provides the clearance, the springs/spacers just provide the added ride height and clearance under the frame...

Yeah, its amazing how much room you loose with wider tires..

Excellent! Thank you for your help guys. It's settled - not done or paid for, but decided - 2" BL, wheels and 285's soon, and a Sonoran Steel kit when money allows. It's nice not to have to do it all at once. And it would look retarded to do the lift and BL first, then the tires. Now where's my wallet...funny, it's smoking and there is a hole where there used to be money. hmm.
