Can it be done?

Wait, let me rephrase that, what fitment/rubbing issues and I going to have on a stock height '97 4Runner with 255/85s? I need new tires NOW, but am going to have to wait until after Christmas to purchase a lift. So, I'm stuck; do I buy 265/75s now and run them until I can purchase a lift, or do I go ahead and get the 255/85s and deal with any rubbing issues until I get a lift on?

From my reading here and on the ExpiditionWest pages, it appears that the only rubbing issues that exist with the 255/85s are on the pinch weld and on the fender flare screws, and that's at full stuff/turn, and full stuff on a lifted rig is the same as on a stock rig, so I'm really not seeing an issue.

Any usefull input?

i think huskyrunner did it but i'm not sure. i have the 255/85's with a 3" lift and when i turn slightly and the tire is stuffed, the outside edge of the tire rubs where the mudflaps overlap on the inside fender.

I did. If I remember right, the Expeditions West truck had coilovers on it, which will lift it, and they had to do some pinch weld trimming as well. A body lift is an easy way to REALLY cut down on the trimming required though. You'll need to pound down the pinch weld area with or without a lift, because, like you said, the tire still compresses to the same spot. The BL will lift the body away from the tire, minimizing the trimming required, and allowing you to put the new tires on before you get a lift. I'm pretty positive that 255's won't fit (without an unreasonable amount of cutting) without a BL or suspension lift. The tire simply won't have room to turn, never mind for the suspension to compress. That 2" makes all the difference. What brand tire are you looking at?
