22RE Timing Chain Alignment

I just replaced the head gasket on my 22re, and when I put the head back on and went to put the timing chain sprocket back onto the cam I noticed that while the engine was at TDC the mark on the cam and sprocket are not EXACTLY at 12 o'clock. It is within one link of chain from 12 o'clock, that is, if I move it over one link it is about the same distance off in the opposite direction. Does anyone know which side of 12 o'clock it should be on, or if this is a major issue how it can be resolved? Thanks for the help.

I think that it is probably ok. Did you get a good luck at it whenever you took everything apart? When I did my timing chaing, I don't think the mark was exactly at 12:00. I can't, however, remember which side it was set off to. Do the bright links line up fine, and everything?

I didn't replace it, just used the one that was in there...so there aren't any bright links. For what it's worth when I was putting it back together today I noticed that on the front of the head there is a 1 and an arrow that points at the chain, but slightly off center, so I'm hoping it's all good....as an aside I was less than impressed with the amount of info Haynes/My local Toyota dealer had on the issue...

did you mill the head? if so, the cam is slightly closer to the crank and will affect cam timing very slightly, and/or your chain is probably stretched some
