22re leaning out?

On the same side the oil filter is just behind it towards the fire wall mounted on the block. It's about the size of a quarter round and about 3/4" thick with a single plug connector coming out the middle.

Do this have anything to do with it? I checked what you are talking about and it seems to be screwed in tight. The wire coming from it is in good shape too. If my truck is pinging shouldnt this thing be trying to fix it?

Nope, that is not it. Yes this sensor would be trying to fix it but if it's lose the ECU is trying to correct a problem with the engine efi system not a lose sensor. If your engine is fine and you have a lose sensor it is trying to correct a non existing problem and making adjust ments that are not needed. This may not be your problem because there are many things involved with the EFI system that affect the timing. The knock sensor in under the intake pretty close to the oil filter it's hard to see.

I checked the knock sensor and its in tight, so i dont think that is the problem. The problem could be from excessive carbon buildup in the combustion chamber. Anyone know of a good way to clean this out really good? Thanks

You can try RXP they sell it at most parts stores. I dont know how well it works? The best way is to pop off the head and clean away, But thats a ton a work. One thing i noticed when i broke down my engine is there is an EGR chamber running thru the back of the head and it's a $$tch to get at. It's like a cover plate on the back of the head. Mine was pretty well clog as well as the port running thru the EGR itself. The carbon builds up like a rock.

I pulled off my egr and there wasn't to much carbon buildup in there. Enough to chip some off, but by no means plugging the whole chamber. Is there anyway to clean carbon buildup without pulling the head?

I dont want someone trying this and toasting their engine because they did it wrong! Give me a buzz when you get the chance and we can go over some more options to resovle the ping? You can catch me during the day also. What about the high grade gas?

Running on 93octane really helped alot, I hardly noticed any pings at all. Only really up hill in 5th floored is where i heard them at. Even then its hardly noticeable. What could be the soultion to this? I cant really afford running 93 octane all time. If anyone has any hints let me know. Also thanks for everyone helping me on this, couldnt have done it without you.

One thing I noticed you said was when you first start it, it idles at about 500rpm, and after warming up, idles at about 1000rpm. I had this same problem with mine. Adjusted the TPS and everything was fine. Roger's site has a great writeup on adjusting the TPS here
I also had timing issues that this corrected. You shouldn't have to adjust the timing to less than 5* for it to run right. Hope this helps.

Ok, now that we know the ping is greatly reduced or totally gone when you run the high octane gas I need to make sure that your engine is the 22re(fuel injected) not the 22r(carburated) for future help?

My motor is a 22re (FI), This weekend I am going to replace the T-stat, radator cap, and service the fan clutch. I think it could be caused by running a little hot. I think im gonna go to a 180 T-stat, I have heard good things about it.
Mark-how did u get a 91 with a 22r? They stopped making those in 88 didnt they?
