22R-E Head Question.

What is the difference between a 22R-E head with round ports and one with pear shaped ports?? Anybody know??? I need to find out if they are interchangeable.

22re heads

the heads with the round ports are from 81-84 and the ones with pear shaped ports are from 85 and newer. you can't use the round port head on a engine with the pear shaped ones or vice versa. in 85 they redesigned the engine internally. the 85 and newer engines the block is a 1/4 inch shorter. the newer head when you put it on a older engine the pistons will hit. so you need the exact one you have know. hope this helps you i got a used head for a guys truck i was working on and figured that out . he had a burnt valve and got a 86 22r head and tried to put it on a 84 22r and found out about the pistons hitting the head. you can't even bolt the head down rite.

what would happen if I put an 83 head on an 87 moter. the pistons are flat tom so they won't hit the head but the compresion would be wrong. Right????
