2001 leased toyota odometer disconection
I thought someone might have done this before.
I have a 2001 Toyota 4Runner on a three year lease. I'm allowed 12,000 miles a year and two years in I'm up to 32,000 (ouch!).
Is there a way to slooooooow down the odometer? Would the dealership notice if I disconected the spedometer cable? Would this show up on the cars computer? How would I disconect it? I don't have a shop book so the more detail the better.
Thanks,
(ummm...) jimbo?

I have notified the authorites...
But seriously, thats not a little slap on the wrist if you get caught, odometer fraud is a serious deal. I would highly reccomend trying to stick to your lease agreement, dont tamper with the odometer.

yea, i say dont mess with it and just drive less?? that sounds kinda dumb but you should find out what the penalty is for excedding the limit and see if you can talk to the dealership about it...good luck!

Dan nice try, I know where you are coming from. My 1998 has 102,000 Miles and is leased for 4 years!! So basically, I am screwed. I have a buddy that writes off the truck each time I turn it in with only one exception I have to re-lease another Toyota. And to all the skeptics, he does NOT roll the mileage into the agreement each time I trade my car/truck in. So that's a good thing
Besides Dan. I tried it to see if it could be done....sorry:cry:
it simply cannot. IT started on all trucks 1996 and above. This was told to me by a Senior Toyota Mech. I don't know exactly remenber the specifics, but he said the place where you need to get to is sealed and runs off a magnetic eye. When the truck rolls this 'eye' senses the movement of the truck and thus rolls the odometer. If you try to unhook it(If you can get to it that is)?? The truck will stop running. ALso if you try in any other way to do so other than this previous method, the truck will lose siginificant power and drive very very poorly (don't ask me how I know.
Everybody is right, it a very serious crime if caught and its NOT even worth it
Hey besides we pay to Play
Now pay up suKka!!

Hi Dan,
Welcome to the Forum
, I have a friend that tried that for a 2000 Land Cruiser... He even tried to have it done professionaly..but the techs responded right away that it cannot be done just because of the new technology behind it.
Anyway, I don't think you want to mess around with that just get your lease extended or something

They had a special on my local news channel about a place that would leave a secret message in an outdoor barbecue at a used car lot for the night time mechanic when the place was closed.
It would say which car and how much to roll it back.
One such rig was a 1st gen Runner.
The news crew taped him reading the message, setting it back, and then busted him on tape and then played it on TV for us.
Personaly if I had purchaced a rig from a lot or private party and they had rolled it back on me and I found out, I might be prone to some violent act.
Stuff like that gets me very upset.

The seals are hell and you can never put them back correctly.
There used to be pins in the older speedo's but they broke to turn it back and the numbers never lined up right.
Unless there is a mileage counter in the computer on the truck (sounds weird but my mother's Volvo 960 gauge stopped working and they still knew the mileage, the mechanic there said it was logged in the computer that was on the transmission) the only way might be to get a complete other gauge cluster.
I've already said too much....I don't know much about these things

My nephew ran into the same lease problem with his 2001 Ford Explorer and he attempted this very same thing you are asking about. I told him it was a highly illegal to do such and he said so what. I then asked him how he would feel if he went to a dealer and paid for a car that had "low mileage" and then found out later that it had been tampered with? Again, he said so what. I finally told him I hope he gets busted when he turns it back in when the lease is over. He said he wouldn't because a friend of his knew how to disconect the odometer. So, he now drives without any of the gauges working - temp, gas, oil, alt., etc. He makes it a point to fill his gas tank often so as not to run out. I told him just because his friend removed the fuse that controls the gauges was NOT preventing the mileage from being known to the onboard computer. He said for me to mind my own business.
I smiled and walked away knowing that someday soon instead of rolling back odometers, he will be in jail or prison pulling down his britches and getting lots of mileage this way with the other losers he will be incarcerated with ----->

Whitney, Your are so right about the on board computet still working. Just becasue he pulled the fues doesn't matter at all. I hope the dealer doesn't investigate further when he truns in that Ford. He is going to get caught bigtime
