(((((Main question (besides the other bs)...
I am looking at buying a 2001 4runner SR5 3.4L auto for $1500obo about 3 hours north of me. Runs and drives but reverse is out. Is there any way I can swap the A340F from 1998 or a 2000 rig into the 2001 rig?! I can't find a straight answer. Any info would be greatly appreciated!!!))))

Research (if correct):
-Pre 2001 had a manual kick down linkage then 2001-2003 is electronic. I believe I read 2003 was a split year for 3rd and 4th gen...
-Found an article on transforming the 2wd A340E into an A340F if needed.

Thoughts:
-Using the electronic kick down components from the 2001 trans to convert the manual kick down trans into electronic kick down?!
-Convert the 2001 rig itself to operate the manual kick down? I.E. Swap linkages and possibly electronics from one of the donor rigs (PCM, ECM, BCM) ?!?!?!?!

A340F donors:
-( http://madison.craigslist.org/cto/5035489766.html ) 98 4runner SR5 3.4L auto 4x4 that has severe damage to one side. Not worth fixing but still has a lot of good parts. Slightly drives, snapped rear axle... Would have to haul home. $1000 firm and is 3 hours east of me.
-( http://madison.craigslist.org/cto/5015491352.html ) 2000 4Runner SR5 3.4L auto 4x4 which was in a light rollover but still looks pretty decent. Maybe even worth fixing. Drive home. Asking $1200 and is almost 4 hours east of me.
-Junkyard trans for $900 with 219k miles on it which is about 2 hours away..bolt right in.

I could buy the JY trans but I'd rather buy one of the wrecked ones because I will easily use any remaining good parts and I don't like the $900 price tag on a 219k mile trans... I buy mostly 4Runners (had 7) and Ford Rangers (almost 30) with body damage or mechanical issues, fix them up, make em sparkle, then resell them.

The 1998 doesn't have kickdown linkage. None of the a340f had kickdown cable. It has a cable for line pressure. All those trannys were electonically shifted. The ECU will almost certainly have to be swapped or repin the trans wires because the pins locations change year to year. Physically, yes they'll fit, electronically, no you'll need to repin electronics.

Last night I bought the 01 SR5 with no reverse for $1000. It does absolutely nothing when put into reverse and has one code stored... P1760 Shift Solenoid No. 4 Circuit Malfunction.
