Question 1990 V6 - Engine Sick

I just bought it, and it needs at least a water pump. I've had a 22re and a 3.4 V6, but know nothing about the 3.0. I figure to do the timing belt at the same time as the water pump. So, I'm wondering about also doing an overhaul, and cams etc. to boost the performance. What would be some cost effective mods for performance while it's torn down? - It's also throwing a code 21, but I'm thinking maybe that's a detail? I"m waiting right now for the results of an oil analysis to come back too.

Not much you can do performance wise with just the timing cover off..no cams available. You could do a drop in K&N and the ISR mod but thats about it. headers are doable but alot easier with the heads off...engnbldr.com for your parts

there are indeed cams available...however they are VEERY pricey.

If you dont mind pulling the heads, do so, do 1mm oversized exhaust valves, port/polish head, headers, intake, electric fan, MAF conversion and you should be good

BTW - beware of the crank pully bolt - its torqued to 181ftlbs of torque! I did my 90 3vze a while ago, looking back it wasnt that rough.

I got nothin' but empathy for ya. I'm in the midst of 3.0 replacement at 224K.

Hey! I did my waterpump and timing belt about 3 weeks ago, and it isn't that bad. the worst part of it is the stupid crank bolt. Like Bumpin' Yota said, it's torqued to 181 ftlbs. Kind of a pain to get off. Other than that, the rest isn't too bad.

You may want to check to see if your front oil seal is leaking while you have everything torn appart. Also, replace the thermostate and either/both of the idler pullies if they need it.

Well, that's my $.02.
Have fun all.

Pull the radiator to give ya plenty of room so you can get a rattle gun in there for that crank pulley. Besides you can never have too much room to work.

We are in the middle of a rering and bearing job right now. Just got everything torn down and cleaned. Just need to get the measuring done and the parts ordered.
