03 4Runner V6 Knocking Noise Going up Hill

Hey all,
I've made a similar post in the past, but have a little more info and was hoping someone could help me out. My 03 4runner V6 has been making a pinging noise when I have had it parked in a garage or near a wall - sounds like valve lifters or fuel injectors? Now, when I go up a hill, the engine sounds like a diesel engine - not too loud but noticable.
I've put premium fuel in the thing hoping that was the problem but I still hear it. The dealer said they thought it was normal? I hate to have them open up a new engine in fear of tearing something else up.
Should I take it back to the dealer? Is having the timing checked a good idea?

Thanks in advance!!

David

I have a 03 4runner V6 and have noticed a slight rattle - diesel sound on acceleration for about the first 5 minutes of operation. After that it goes away, runs smooth no pinging or rattles. Just got the car, so I can’t comment too much. I would also be leery about having the dealer open up that new engine.

Now that you've described a diesel-like rattle, it sounds similar to the problem in my MR2 Spyder with the same symptoms. That was repaired (and became a TSB) by replacing the serpentine belt tensioner. It maintains correct tension on the accessory drive belt and became noisy soon after it was new. It required replacement of the tensioner and pulley assembly with the bracket, and a new belt. Mention the Spyder TSB to your dealer for reference and maybe it'll get things going in the right direction.

If your running low octane gas switch to mid grade or premium. That should solve your pinging problem.
