01 tacoma tranny problem (5spd)
I have an 01 tacoma 4x4 (3.4l 5spd) TRD it only has 30k miles on it. So here is the problem:
When I shift from first to second (also downshift 3 to 2), it often doesn't want to go into second gear. Sometimes if I double clutch it is ok, but other times it still gives me trouble. Also, if I let the clutch out too far while in nuetral and rolling (double clutching) then there is a knocking sound and I can feel it on the floor of the car. Also, recently it does not want to come out of first gear every now and then.
I took it in to Toyota and told them I thought the clutch needed to be adjusted, but they looked at it and said it was fine. I told them about how it wont go into second gear, but the mechanic just put on the notes that the clutch is starting to show a little wear. (Which should not be the problem if it is properly adjusted!)???
Also, it is never a smooth shift, but some times it is harder then others!! sometimes it grinds going into first also!
I am not hard on the tranny but I have only owned the truck for 2500 miles now. I have driven manuals for a while and never had this problem. It seems from what I could find on the web it could be the syncros. If anybody could fill me in on whats causing this and what it takes to fix, that would help a ton. Also, any idea what something like this costs to fix? And if you know if it is something that should be covered on the warranty??
Thanks.

Sounds like the synchros on second gear are going bad and not slowing the gear down enough for you to shift smoothly. I had an '01 Tacoma 5spd with no shifting problems what so ever. You're right on track with your theory and the repair should be covered under the powertrain warranty and the 3/36 too. Get it to the stealer b/c if 2nd is going bad, the others will probably begin to follow suit. Also, don't let them tell you this is normal or not covered because neither is true.

I have an '01 Taco with 70k on it, I drive a lot of freeway, and I have no shifting problems and have yet to get any powertrain work done. The only gear I sometimes can't get is reverse so I have to roll the truck back or bump it forward a couple inches then try again.

Darx, that's also a synchro problem since you shouldn't have to move the truck or double clutch it to shift into Reverse. After all, you're not driving am 10-wheeler or a Big Three vehicle!

The only problem that I have ever heard of before with these trannies is the 3rd gear problem. I myself have experienced that many times. 3rd gear has always been harder to grab, but I never have the problem unless I am going like a bat out of hell...

it was used in '81 and '82 i believe...all 3 of the 5 speeds from '81-84(L50, L52, G52) are all known to be weak, but i think the L50 is the most notorious
first 5th gear goes, then 3rd, then 1st, then 2nd, and all you're left with is 4th to get you home
