yoterr's 86' pickup build thread
so its been a long time coming now, prolly 3+ years in the making, finally got enough stuff done to it to make my own build thread.
so i bought the truck back in 08' IIRC? with a 4" superlift suspension lift and 3" body lift, with bald 35" procomp mud terrains, and lots of little problems for $1200
wheeled it like it was for a short while,
then scored 85' solid axles matching set with springs front and rear and 6 shocks for $400 sweeeeet deal
started the rebuild on the front axle..GOOD GOD this thing was in bad shape
knuckles, all rusty no grease..
balls and birfs all nice n rusty
awesome goop
cleaned up with new bearing races
truss weldered on
all mocked together
my old nissan 48" leaf setup that got ditched...mocked up
axle under the truck
had to move the steering box forward for the RUF swap so here it is pushed all the way forward cutting into the body mount..
got my shock hoops mostly tacked in
done, with old wore out procomp shocks
wheeled it for a lil while with the nissan leafs...and bent the crap out of them
after weeks and weeks of searching for 88+ 51" toyota rears i found some...within 5 mins of my house at a friends house lol
putting them together
burned out the steel insert to fit the 18mm bolts
much much better flex, but now my shackles hit the frame lol
wheeled it like that for a month or so in 2wd
then finally made a square tube D-shaft...i didint get any pics of the build tho? but dimensions were 2x2x1/4" wall and 2.5x2.5x5/8" wall..he didint have it in 1/4" but i just welded on some 16guage steel on two sides and that plus the welds took the slop out...works awesome
got tired of the ride with the shackles on the frame so i bought some ebay jeep boomerang shackles for $25 bucks, their 3/8th thick and have 1/2" bolt holes..i used a 3/4 drill bit (19mm) to drill them out with
next to a TG 6" shackle
next to my current shackle
got the holes drilled out
got them painted and installed...thank god for a cherry picker lol
wheeled er down
and that brings it up to date..
lemme kno what you guys think, im going to be adding to this thread whenever i get something done..still have some plans left for her but shes about where i want her for now!
next on the list of to do's are...
timing kit and cover from engnbldr...ordered
14" shocks for the front....ordered doetsch tech 8000's-DONE
wheels and tires...looking into military 36" bias and a tire groover
extending front brake lines (front lines off a 300Z)..got em
armor, bumpers and sliders...

so i finally got my doetsch tech shocks in from low range offroad...awesomeness!!
snagged a few pics..
new sticker wooot! lol
and finally got some pics of my quick release door mod..this is using sombodys youtube video for reference...cant remember who..
but basically you just unbolt the door side of the hinges. Take an angle grinder with a cutoff wheel and cut the door pin in two. Use a chisle and hammer imbeween them driving them out. Then replace with the new 5/16's hitch pin. You also have to grind down the bolts to make the pin fit easier..and the door fits like factory no worries!! and with 2 extra hands its pretty easy to remove
as you can see with the hitch pin you have the retainer wire that kinda screws up the paint imbeween the doors..but i dun care it looks like a rainbow in there anyways..
you can also use a 5/16's x 2" 1/4 clevis pin with some tiny pins to hold those in...and they wont mess up your paint .. but i couldnt find them long enough..

So I have the standard 86 p/u........ Right now she has a body lift and some pro comp all terrains for the desert, but a huge problem last time i took it out was the rear 1wd differential. So I'm looking ta do an axle swap or diff link to get both back wheels spinning and give me a little more grip. Anyone know if I could just take an axle off a 86 4x4 and drop it onnn??? will everything line up? What about a different model? Or Maybe a 4runner?? Also, what's with these differential locking kits, are they any good? Thanks everyone!
