This reminds me, years ago my brother told me not to use the larger oil filter available for my then 87 xtra cab because it would lower the oil pressure and prematurely wear out the tensioner. I ran a larger oil filter because I thought more oil was better. Had one chain go up sooner then I thought it should, then he told me about the tensioner.

that shouldn't matter; the filter is before the tensioner. if it was after, then it would matter. it goes: pan > pump > filter > tensioner > pan

If that really is a MLS (Cometic) head gasket, that is a heck of a price. Good find.

Doubt it's a true cometic gasket. I think the term MLS is used too much in the industry and leads to confusions on how to mill a block and head personally.

And as far as the oil filter deal, I only use the correct application PureOne Purolator filter.

Oil pressure per the guage was slightly low, just below the quarter mark at idle, but would jump to normal at regular rpms. So that oil leak between the block and tensioner wasn't affecting overall oil pressure like a missing galley plug would.

As far as the larger filter deal, the only drawback to that would be starting oil pressure if the filter didn't have an anti-drainback valve or that valve failed to keep the oil in the filter. It would mean it would take slightly longer to fill the oil filter when it was sitting long enough to empty the filter. Once filled it would not affect oil pressure, at least not near enough to matter.

X2 on the 83! WOOT! Now I REALLY miss mine, haha... Wow, very little rust apparently? I loved having the longbed, personally. With a shell on it was quite the lil camping spot, plenty of legroom

Really hope this works out for ya, Brandon

The 83 is gonna be quite a bit of work to get it running. It goes beyond just the engine trans and t-case. It needs a fuel tank, radiator, and the brakes looked at. Not sure about clutch lines. A SBC is sitting in it right now with an auto trans. I'm beginning to think it's not worth $500. And it's got a bearly passable set of 35's on it.

Depends on how long I want to be without a truck and if the GF minds and if I have the area/means to have it down that long. The 83 after researching is a PITA to find a tank for. The guy has an 84 one, but it's different. Oh yeah and it's titled and vin'd as an 84 not an 83 for some stupid reason. And it might be an out of state title.

I say keep the sbc and tranny due to the fact you would need to get new motor and tranny mounts

im planning on doing this to mine and for the tank then u could get a s10 tank and make it fit... good luck!!!

the SBC that is in there uses the OEM 4cyl mounts using an adapter. The GM transmission is mated to the Toyota transfer case. The adapter will come with the truck. I'll sell that later. The cross member I was told is still in the same location. Mounts the same.

racerflea it's a long bed. I may have to move the cross memeber which is easy, but the transfercase mount is the same. The mount on these unlike a Chevy is on the transfer not the trans. Unless I am brain farting.

And No Chef, the SBC was never a consideration. The guys selling the engine and trans from that truck separately. I don't get it for the $500. Besides I like the 4cyl mud bog classes around here.

I'll save a SBC swap for a 2wd 1st gen and make a street truck out of it.

After making sure the frame is in good condition and it is worthy of building if you feel as though you have no other options on a gas tank pm me your year make and model with all other important information on the truck along with your shipping address and i will get you a quote. I'm not going to sugar cote it it will be pricey to purchase and ship but i should be able to get you one for your truck. Going from your ifs truck to solid axle and especially a 83 you will love it.

Right. It's an 83, I can't find an aftermarket tank for it at all and it seems the OEM tanks up to 82 and 84- are different then this 83. It's like a bastard child. But again, I haven't studied these gens all that much. I could be reading the applications wrong.

I'll keep you in mind. Thanks.

EDIT:
I think this is the right part number. As long as the long beds were the DLX and SR5's and not a base model.

Truck, Pickup 1981.11-1983.07 4cyl 2.2L MTM DLX

You have the LN40 which is what this is for, then you have the RN3 and RN4's. I assume the RN's were the short beds unless the LN40's were the 2wd trucks. I don't know. Not much info on the frame codes out there.

EDIT #2 Scratch that: LN40 is the 2wd.
